Christmas Bike Memory

I remember as a kid the best thing in Boy's Life Magazine was the Schwinn Bicycle Ad. I would spend hours looking at the ad, and especially the Schwinn Varsity. I wanted one so badly, but I didn't think my parents would ever be able to afford it so I didn't bother to ask. Well the Christmas when I was 11 was approaching and there were multiple presents under the tree for my sisters, but nothing for me, which of course had me worried. Christmas morning when I woke up I found only one present under the tree from my parents, a tiny flat package. When I opened it I found an owner's manual for a Schwinn Varsity and went nuts. My parents told me to look outside. There is was in the middle of the driveway a beautiful brown Schwinn Varsity. They were afraid that I would see it under the Christmas tree, so they left it parked in the driveway all night (times were different). I still think of that as my best Christmas ever!

Awesome memory!
I know I got bikes for several Christmas's but I can't remember them that vividly.
I am getting a bike this Christmas and although I paid for it & got sized for it, I let my dad & husband pick it out...so I feel like my 7 year old self who asked Santa for a bike and I'm just waiting to wake up to my new bike :bigsmile:0 -
Love it! I never got a bike for Christmas (got one for my birthday once) but I did get a bb gun and I never shot my eye out.0

That's one of my favorite things about riding a bike as an adult; under the right circumstances like going down a big hill, I still feel exactly like I did when I was seven and first felt the freedom bike riding brings.0 -

I never got a bbgun, probably because my parents knew I would shoot my eye out (looking back they were probably right).0 -
dothompson, you will get a kick out of this. Our son is nearly 11 and this will be hiding in the bathtub for him Christmas AM:

We're going to have some clues to lead him to find it there. I am so excited that I can't sleep. I can't wait for him to be able to ride more with us.0 -
I never got a bike for Christmas, but when I was 17, my dad took me to the LBS a couple of weeks before Christmas and bought me my first proper racing wheels. I'd been building a bike, getting paid in parts from my saturday job at the LBS, and was so close to finishing the bike I could taste it. Problem was I needed the Wheels and the Saddle.
My dad, bless him, went in to the shop with me and said "what were those wheels you were on about??" I said "oh - they don't have 'em in stock dad, they're made to order", to which Mick (the shop owner) chimed in with "Ah... those Shimano 600 and Mavic GP4 CD's with 28 Double Butted Chrome front and rear you've been moaning about not being able to afford yet?" and pulled out a big box from behind the counter... Turned out my dad had called in one day and spoken to Mick, and Mick had "social engineered" my wheel spec. out of me, and built a pair for me, on the QT. I can't honestly ever remember being as surprised at a Christmas pressie in my life!0 -

So how did it go? I can just imagine how excited he was, and it must have been just as much fun for you!
Great memories for everyone.0 -
