Clothing guidelines from myself to me (and what do you think

1. Never buy tops or dresses that need hand washing and ironing (and probably don’t buy skirts like that either). I will hand wash periodically, I may iron even less than that but the two together is just too much.

2. Wear the ‘good’ and unusual stuff regularly. The more expensive something is, the more it ought to be worn. Unusual clothes can be integrated into my week with just a touch more effort and they add a lot more interest to my look. There is no point having this type of thing looking lovely or interesting in my wardrobe while I look boring every day.

3. No, I’m not going to get substantially thinner (and if I do, I can treat myself to new clothes). I’ve bitten the bullet and thrown out or sold several things that I like or that are ‘still good’ but don’t fit.

4. Mend or throw out straight away! Clothes that need a button sewn on are no use sitting in my wardrobe. They make it look like I have more clothes to wear than I actually do. I must either get around to fixing them or if they’re not nice enough to motivate my sewing, throw them out.

5. Shoes that are beautiful but too high even to wear to a job that involves sitting down all day are no good! Ditto shoes that take months to be broken in and still cause pain or shoes that are too loose to stay on my feet. Medium heels may not be as fashionable, flattering and beautiful in themselves, but buggering up my body for fashion is not worth it!

6. However, spending money on well made, comfy, attractive leather shoes is always worth it. Ditto a really nice watch and handbag. I use the same handbag every day so it should be one I love.

7. New jobs = slightly different clothing expectations. I have about five similar jackets and two dresses from my old job that I’m just not wearing now. But I’ll take some of them with me in case my new job in England needs jackets. Also, they’ll be good for interviews.

8. Be wary of clothing that makes me slightly uncomfortable - a too short dress that I think I can get away with in the changing room will be definitely too short in real life. Ditto sleeveless tops. Very low necklines on summer dresses are a pain ‘cos they mean you need to add another layer underneath thence defeating the idea of a light summer dress.

9. I spend 95% of my clothing budget on work clothes, leaving me slobbing around looking horrid in the weekends. I really need to bring myself to keep a nice weekend wardrobe (and no, I don’t usually want to bring my work clothes into my weekend wardrobe. I like keeping them separate so I feel like I’m getting a break. No casual Fridays for me!).

10. Cheap costume jewellery rocks! (If you choose carefully.) For $10 I can pep up an outfit or tie in some colour. I don’t really do scarves or much in the way of interesting belts but they have a similar effect.

- I wrote this last year, just found it again. I have actually gotten thinner, but I don't regret throwing out my old 'thin' clothes. Things date and it's nicer to buy new.

Soooo.... what do you think? What are your 10 Clothing Commandments?

I love #2, 6, 8, and 10!!!! (2) I can't stand the idea of some amazing article of clothing I have being worn once a year--work the good stuff into the everyday, for sure. (6) Great leather shoes can be resoled, an amazing handbag is essential, and for me, since I wear glasses, I have to have a great pair of glasses- I splurge on these things. (8) If you feel uncomfortable, it's just never going to work (too short of a hemline is a major culprit!) Part of looking good is confidence and you just can't have that when you are uncomfortable. (10) "Cheap costume jewellery rocks!" Ding! Ding! Ding! Seriously, there are so much inexpensive accessories theses days, necklaces, rings, bracelets, tights, belts... You can be completely current, edgy, and stylish without buying a whole new closet.
I also constantly 'edit' my closet and give away things that I just don't like anymore or aren't working for me.
    Can't wait to hear more!
  • I really like this and can be taken as good advice. I always look at my clothes in my closet and feel like I don't wear too many of them. And I should definitely put up my "winter clothes" during the summer so they don't take up space in my closet. It's hard though, cause I think I wear just abut everything.

Definetly good advice - I can't incorporate my 'nice' articles for work, since I wear a uniform - wish I could get away with it. I love my miserable high heels... LOL. a fetish of mine. So some aren't going to fit into my life at this time but once again these are all great guidelines.
