I'm from the Midwest (USA). I've set a goal to do a triathlon next August locally. My husband thinks I'm nuts. I can't swim well and have a bad knee, but I think if I train smart, take off some pounds and hire a swim coach, I can do it. This would take a great commitment , but I figure life is short and this would be worth it, no?
  • Hey!
    And, yes!
I met someone right before my triathlon and he told me that it does not matter how you finish, just so long as you finish. Walk it, drag yourself through it, just finish it! It doesn't need to look pretty, it just needs to get done.
That might sound unpleasant, and you need to consider your joints, because they are in it for the long run, but you can get through it one way or another and you might as well give it a try!
In my experience, you will never be fully prepared-you just need to decide to do it (don't listen to naysayers!)!
As for the swim, they sometimes have triathlon groups to help with all parts-including swimming. Open water swims (if that is what you are doing) are a bit different than pool lap swims-but any sort will help.
What do you mean when you say you can't swim well? Is it stamina? Stroke improvement?

I live in Chapel Hill NC. I am lucky to workout in a facility with tri coaches and various clinics are offered throughout the year geared to triathletes.

I use the website www.sportsoften.com. It is only for races in the US, but it includes many race events, including triathlons.

If you believe you can do it, then you will do it. A swim coach is a good idea, I would also look for swim clinics geared to triathletes. Take care of that knee while you train. The swim causes the most anxiety for many racers, but in reality, it accounts for the shortest leg of the race. I agree with Leesseebee you are never truly ready, so you do your best and then learn from race to race. I am beginning my second year of competing in sprint triathlons and my husband STILL thinks I am nuts! But he supports me, never says a word as I slip out on Sun mornings to ride my bike, and on race day he and the dog met up with me 3x during the cycle course---what more can I ask for

Hi there! I live in the Denver, CO. I started doing triathlons in 2010, and did 3 that summer (sprint distance).

I love doing tris, and sadly, wasn't able to compete in any in 2011 as I decided to make a career change, quit my job, and am going back to school for Human Performance/Exercise Health Science. I hope to get back into it for 2012, and was pleased that swimming was a requirement for my program since that's my worst leg :)

I also work in a local bike shop as a group ride leader organizing group rides for Saturdays here (can you guess what my best leg of the race is? )

If you're looking for info on CO based tris, let me know and I'll try to help. I've also got connections for training and equipment rental if you need it here.

    Good luck!

My first tri was with the Danskin Women's Series - they are super supportive and even offer "Swim Angels" to help you through that portion of the event. I have done other tri's since then and in my experience the Danskin events (and its participants) are the most supporting & amazing women series out there. Admittedly, I haven't tried all of the women's events offered (and there are several), but the one thing that I found is that the encouragement that you need out there in the middle of the course happens more when its only women competiting with each other (and most importantly) with/against themselves.

I really like using TriFind.com. They have listings for every state I believe. I live in Utah, and they never miss posting a race
