I"m new to MFP and I'm a FTM and currently breastfeeding my 3 month old. I know it says to add 500 calories to what it says you should be taking in but can you add it to your calorie count or do I just need to look at my total and know that if it says for example I only have 500 calories left for the day that I just need to remember I have 1000 or can I add it on there somehow? Thanks in advance.

You can add it to your food diary - it's a bit odd but it's available in the food database. Go to your food diary and click 'add food' and search 'breastfeeding' - several options pop up. If you choose 'breastfeeding exclusively' it will actually add 500 calories to your calorie goal for that day. If baby starts using some formula or eating some solid foods, you can choose the option that says 'mom of older baby' and it will add only 300 instead.

You have to do this every day, but after you add it a couple of times it will start showing up in your 'most used' list where you can find and add it quickly without searching. :-)
  • I would always just add it to my exercise.
