Height vs. exercise?

Here's a question for all of you tall ladies:

I've noticed that I have a hard time with certain exercises, and I'm wondering if my height (5'11") has anything to do with it.

For example, I'm in the middle of Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred, and am attempting to do the forward and backward lunges at her pace, but I CANNOT step out far enough, get down low enough, and get back to standing in the amount of time that they are doing it! I feel like with my long legs, I have farther to go. Does that make sense?

Another exercise that has frustrated me to no end is the dreaded pushup. Now, I will say that my inability to do even one regular pushup is probably due to my pathetic upper body strength:blushing: BUT, it got me thinking, and I found this article:

http://www.livestrong.com/article/382386-are-pushups-harder-for-a-tall-person-to-do/?utm_source=popslideshow&utm_medium=a1

It makes me feel a bit less frustrated! Anyone else having difficulties like this?

YES! i do the movements on the 30DS at my own pace. especially when she is talking about timing your breathing with your punches... um NOT... lol

but the push-up i completely agree. i can do about a half pushup and thats it. so im sure the length of our limbs has alot to do with it.

no worries... no one ever said it had to be perfect! just perfect FOR you :O)

Oh thank god I'm not the only one that feels like this! lol

I'm 5'10 but pretty much alllll leg (my hips and rib cage are about an inch apart) so lunges, especially quickly, are a challege for me. Thanks for posting that article though, makes me feel better about my inability to do pushups and pull ups lol :P (definitely my height...not my week upper body strength...heh)
  • A lot of the reason you can't keep up is because you haven't got the strength and agility yet, and we are bigger, we weigh more, we have longer limbs. But it WILL come. I'm 5'11, and when I first started working out I could not keep up with anything. I can keep up now! And it will happen fast if you keep at it! Once you get the hang of it, you're going to build your strength and agility fast BECAUSE you have a bigger stride and you have more mass, and you have to work harder for it. Comparing myself to other, average height women I know who started around the same time as me, I went farther faster. But boy did I have it rough in the beginning! Keep at it!

I have issues with stretching, I am rubbish at yoga and even struggle with simple leg stretches after cardio.

^Absolutely right. When I was younger, (I've been 6' tall since I was 16 though mind you) and in ballet, I could do anything and everything at a lightening pace. Now that I'm older, have packed on the pounds, and fallen out of shape, I'm a stiff slug. I know that eventually it'll come back to me with strength and agility though :) You'll get there!
