Releasing New Game Consoles

Nothing is concrete of course, but the thought of Microsoft releasing a new system soon makes me cringe. The thought of ANYONE releasing a new version of their console in the near future is not appealing to me.
The Wii U doesn't interest me right now (though I would get it eventually), and I've only had my PS3 for like....maybe almost 2 years? Plus I just bought a second 360 console this past Xmas. I feel that there is FAR too much life left in all of my consoles to even consider purchasing another. Not to mention the cost.
I would have no qualms waiting another 3+ years for another console from any platform.
What are your thoughts? Would you buy a newly released console within the next year or two?

I looked at the handhelds...
PS Vita looks too much like PSP. I kinda don't see the difference and I just don't see the appeal.
PS3 is very much my goto system and has plenty of life.
Wii U looks lame. My Wii has plenty of life... for my in-laws who still play Tennis on it.
I never got into XBox 360. I always thought it was much better suited for FPS games that you play online.... And I never want to pay a subscription. I still can't see it. Plus the "ring of death" problem just steered me away completely. I would consider it for the Kinnect but only because it would give my in-laws a new game to play.0 -
the thought makes me sad because when it happens it will be the first generation of new consoles i didnt really play (i have a wii but hardly play it) and i still wanna get a PS3 sometime just not for the price they want. really why is it still $300 after all this time i picked my ps1 up for about 100 after a year or two and the same with the ps20

well if you're like me (And it sounds like you are) you wouldn't buy the new ones right away ANYWAY and most people don't. so you've still got a couple years of life in them left.0 -

This is very true, I wouldn't buy them right away and that would be fine to an certain extent.
The problem is that once a new console releases, the phase out begins. Sure it would take years before 360/PS3 games weren't sold anymore (I mean look at the PS2), but I still can't help but think of what I would be missing out on by not being able to play what releases for the new consoles, but also what stops being released for the "old" ones.0 -
We'll probably get the Wii U -- we do play our Wii quite a bit, and we like what Nintendo has to offer. Definitely not interested in Microsoft's new anything. We actually just sold our 360 because we NEVER played it. Other than the Vita, I didn't think Sony was releasing any new systems, are they? We'll likely get their next system, but I wasn't aware of anything else on the horizon. We won't be getting the Vita though. Again, we have a PSP, and it never gets played. We just don't do handhelds that often, and most of the games we want for handheld are Nintendo.0

I have all 3 of the current consoles and I wouldn't be buying a new one for a long while. Whichever comes first, the others will still be getting new games. After a couple of years, and the kinks having been ironed out (RLOD I'm looking at you), I would consider it. By then, the price will have dropped, and a backlog of cheaper games will be available.
I will check out the Vita after the summer, to see the games available, and if any price drop occurs. I do less portable gaming these days, but the kids do a lot more.0 -
It's all just rumours so far, don't worry! I don't think that Microsoft or Sony will be releasing a new console, not this year at least. Microsoft are releasing their 320gb Star Wars console this year, it woud be pretty stupid of them to announce a new console a few months later at E3. I think we've got at least another 2-3 years before we see a new console.
I'll be kicking myself if I'm wrong though since I just bought a new 360 to replace my old chunky red ring of death machine haha0
