Gettings Started & Where to Buy

Hi Everyone,

This list is not complete, but these are website I first looked at when I started getting interested in hooping. You can find DVDs and all kinds of quality hoops at any of these websites.

Since we are all different, it's best you search for some of the videos on YouTube first, that way you don't buy an instruction DVD from someone to later find out you either don't like their method or can't stand the sound of their voice =)

Thank you, that should help. I looked at some of these yesterday, and was a little overwhelmed, not sure what weight to by,etc.

Thank you for all of the information! I thought you just hooped while watching tv - LOL - I had no idea there were actual workouts. It looks really fun.

There seems to be a bit of controversy over weighted hoops. Some articles I've read stated that weighted hoops can cause injury (aside from the obvious bangs to threshing or it landing on your toes) I've done both and OWE! I started with a weighted hoop, but quickly moved to a large unweighted hoop.

I just found a 2.5lb sports hoop at walmart. I feel that's a comfortable weight. Plus with a little more weight, you can get the idea of hooping down a little better.

Some adults hoops usually weight around a 1lb. I have a 5 lb hoop and holy moly, did I bruise! I only use that for an ab workout and my other hoops I use for learning tricks and playing.

    Happy Hooping everyone!

Mine isn't weighted but it does weigh more than the children's toy hoops due to the size of the hoop and materials. I think it weighs around 2or 3 pounds. I have two, both from hoopnotica--one travel hoop that comes apart and one regular one. I think it really depends what you want to do with the hoops. But I think the adult sized are generally heavy enough to spin slow enough for an adult beginner and there are more options for tricks, dancing and if you want to hoop on other areas of the body like your chest, etc. I bruise easily (or it shows easily on my pale skin), so I would personally be timid with the weighted hoops!

My hoops, both my collapsible and non, are from a local studio. My hooping teacher Monique makes them by hand based on your height and weather you are a plus size or petite hooper. She also ships them! You can order one here:
