Fast Sunday

I've been a member of the church for about two years now. I'm a sophomore in college and I've lost 25 lbs so far and I still have quite a ways to go. Everything promoting health and weight loss strongly discourages fasting because of how it slows down the metabolism. Would it be bad to not fast on fast Sunday and instead still pay the fast offering, but just pray as you would if you were fasting instead of depriving yourself of food?

Rose,
If you were to reword fasting with tithing and a saying of you really need to pay the bills. How would you feel about that?
One of my strongest motivations is not to let the fridge be my idle. I should not be looking to it for answers. No doctor , nutritionist or some diet takes the place of the prophet.
We have one week to prep.
Friday eat what you want day just do not go over board with it. Saturday rehydrate ,shop for your meals and and Sundays dinner. You will have a whole days worth of calories if you fast breakfast and lunch. OR you can fast for dinner and breakfast so when you get home you can eat something right away ( depending on your wards attendance time)
Your one day of fasting is not going to make your body go into preservation mode and I have faith that if you are praying about loosing weight and following the Words of Wisdom and the prophets messages on diet and health that the spirit will enter your body and help you learn what that temple of yours needs.
The fasting that is discouraged is those who are routinely skipping meals thinking the less calories helps them reach there goal faster instead of just being patient. They forgot how long it took them to put the weight on and think they can loose it faster and to be healthy about it you just can't.
I find a crockpot meal prepped the day before really helps so its ready so I do not get nauseous prepping it on the day I am fasting. If crockpot does not sound great its a microwaved one.
NO Matter what you decide though. We will all love and know you are trying.0 -
I agree with anchorageb2 that the kind of fasting "experts" talk about is the long sustained going without food(many days). I personally don't think fasting once a month for 2 meals is going to hurt weight loss. When I am obedient to what the Lord asks, I know he will bless me. And fasting is a way for me to show obedience and also get spiritual strength. I'm not saying it is easy for me all the time! There are many times when I just want to cut it short or not do it entirely, but I do see what a difference it makes for me after I do it. I know that if you go to your Father in Heaven in prayer, he will help you know what is best for you.0

I can promise you that fasting those two meals isn't going to slow your weight loss journey, in fact, if you work hard on Saturday prior, and Monday following, your body is going to think your nuts for not feeding it on Sunday.
Key following a fast is to have a small simple meal with sugary carbs (in this case, I suggest something like greek yogurt with fresh fruit like berries or peaches).
Time your fast if possible to begin after supper on Sat night, then skip breakfast and lunch, and about 5pm have the first 'course' above. This gives your body the needed carbs that it's going to be craving...
Then, about an hour later, give it a balanced meal with protein, complex carbs (low glycemic veggies like zuchinni, spinach, etc), and even a little fat (avacado). To me, this can be a roast beef and gravy, with a small side of avacado horseradish, spinach, and brocolli.
Later in the evening, have about 15-20 almonds, or even about 20-30 pistachio nuts. This will keep you from feeling hungry so you don't eat most of the calories you supposedly fasted.
No matter what, you should try to get 8 glasses of water anyway to rehydrate your body... this if anything is the one critical way to fend off a body thinking it's in starvation mode. When people starve, they routinely don't get their fluids either, when a person has sufficient water, the body can manage with body stored energy.
I usually eat 800-1000 of my 2200 calories in the evening for dinner, snacks anyway, so to me, I've still fasted in spirit and letter of the law (which is skipping two meals). And this program works for me.0
