Inner ankle pain?

Hello!

So I've been running for over a year now and am in the middle of training for my 1st marathon. All week I've noticed that around 2-3 miles I start to get pain on the inside of my left ankle. Once I stop, slow down or walk the pain seems to go away. I've run long distances many times before so I don't know why all of a sudden I can't seem to get past 3 miles without some kind of pain and only in 1 ankle. Anybody know?

I have been dealing with plantar fasciitis (heel pain) for 6 months or so, and developed post tib tendonitis as a result of the post tib tendon, the one that goes around the bottom of your inner ankle and allows you to arch your foot having to work harder. I had pain just under the ball of the inner ankle. I've had some success in reducing that pain by doing eccentric exercises. Try positioning yourself against a wall like you were going to do a calf stretch, but instead, use your good leg to raise your body up onto the ball of your other foot (with ankle pain), then leave your good leg bent behind behind you off the ground and slowly lower your body weight down on the other foot til your heel touches the ground, you should feel a stretch. If not, you should move your feet further from the wall. Try doing ten reps at first. Should strengthen your arch and ankle. You can also try balancing on a bosu ball to strengthen the ankle, or do the eccentric exercise above on stairs with your foot half way on the tread so that when fully lowered, your heel is lower than the front of your foot. This is also good for the calf. You can also sit with your bad ankle crossed over your other knee. Fully flex the foot inward as far as you can and push against it with your hand while slowly easing off on the flex until you are completely relaxed again. I found these all to be pretty helpful. Good luck with recovery and your marathon.
