360 or PS3?

Fellow gamers,

I haven't had a console since my PSX, back in high school. Since then, I've been focused on PC gaming. My current machine is going on 3 years now (thankfully, it should still hold up against Diablo 3 quite nicely), and I think I'm going to make the switch to console for budgetary reasons. For the price of another gaming laptop, I could get a console for my gaming needs and a tablet + keyboard for my mobile needs.

So! What are your thoughts on which 7th-gen to get? If I got the 360 I'd definitely get the Kinect as well, even if it made me rearrange my living room. I also have little to no interest in Blu-Ray. Given these, is the 360 the way to go? Are there PS3 exclusives that are simply must-haves?

    360.

I just upgraded my old 360 elite for a new slim model w/ kinect, don't know what I was doing this whole time without it. I was able to get an unsold holiday bundle pack from game stop, well worth it: came with 2 games and 3 months free xbox live for the same cost as a stand alone with kinect.

For PS exclusives, I have not found one that I couldnt live without.

Well, most of the awesome games to have are on both systems. In my opinion, the games you would be missing out on if you got an Xbox 360 would be the 'Uncharted' series, 'Ratchet and Clank' series, Shadow of the Collosus/Ico (possibly The Last Gaurdian?) and uhm... well really thats about it. There arent many grand Sony only titles. I suppose it depends on the kind of games you like to play. Since you have an interested in Diablo 3, I dont think youre a CoD or Battlefield fanboy. But even if you were, those are available on both systems anyway. PS3 has those pretty good action adventure titles (and I know I am missing soem good ones, I just dont rememer them right now).

You will, however, be paying about $60 a month for online content, but have access to great titles like Alan Wake, Halo series, and the Kinect games. Playstation has it's 'Move' titles and those are pretty fun. Like a more advanced Wii.

In conclusion, if you dont care about Blu-Ray and the possibility of later having 3D gaming and movies, then the PS3 would not be the best for you. If you dont mind paying $60 for a year of online gaming and online features, then the Xbox 360 is the one for you. They have great combo packs that come with extra controllers and games and whatnot. Either way, you will have fun and doing without those select titles wont kill you to not play. Enjoy!

360 is probably better for you if you plan on doing a lot of online gaming and have friends already on there. PSN is decent enough, but I'll be the first to admit X-Box Live is superior.

Sony has a really good exclusive lineup, main reason I only own a PS3 atm. Uncharted series, InFamous series, Twisted Metal just came out if you're feeling nostalgic, it's pretty sweet.

I think I'm outgrowing console gaming a little bit, most of my focus is on the PC.

I'd say 360 offers more versatility to start you off. Get Gold though to make it worth it. The social aspect is better and I feel like the whole interface is more user friendly (though I hate the new dashboard).

The PS3 also has the God of War series.

You can get a better deal on a year of Xbox Live sometimes. I don't know about now, but recently a year of Live on Amazon was 35 dollars. Game Stop had a deal not too long ago as well. So it can be cheaper if you snag it when it's on sale.

I personally prefer the Xbox 360. We have problems with online gaming with our PS3. We tend to only get exclusives for the PS3, everything else we get on Xbox.

I do agree that it seems like Xbox will probably be a better deal for you unless you want the PS3 exclusives more.

We have 2 of each, I personally like the PS3 more from an aesthetic standpoint (xmb is just overall cleaner and less cluttered than the dashboard on the 360), but I like the 360 a lot too. I don't play a lot of games online, but when I have, I haven't had any issues on either console (I've played Gears and some Halo on the 360, and Killzone 2/3 and Resistance games on the PS3). I know a lot of people say the 360 online infrastructure is better, but for what I do, they're both kind of just what they need to be I guess.

Make sure whatever you buy, you buy it new. Don't trust used consoles, even the newest revisions. You're more likely to get a lemon without a warranty to back it up than not.

As far as console specific exclusives, I can't imagine not having playing through all of the Uncharted games (hell, I bought a Vita just to play Golden Abyss), Heavy Rain is also excellent. There are a ton of great PS3-only titles out there, but whether or not they are must-haves is kind of your call more than anyone on here that might claim to tell you otherwise.

Thanks for all the advice, everyone! The only two things pulling me in the direction of a PS3 are a few of the exclusives (especially Ico/SOTC, which I've never played but would love to) and my nostalgia for my PSX. Things pulling me in the direction of the 360 are the better things I've heard about online play and, I think most importantly, the Kinect. Mass Effect 3 with Kinect sounds very cool, and I'm also interested in a couple of the fitness titles I've heard good things about.

I'll still have my PC for some of the most important games ever -- the Diablo series, Baldur's Gate I and II, Planescape, and Dragon Age: Origins.

If Blu-Ray matters for you then go for the PS3

If a good online infrastructure matters to you go for the Xbox

Otherwise you could go for either machine and they'd probably be the same experience more or less, it's probably best to find out what your friends have and buy around that.

Got PS3 just for the blu-ray but rumor has it the next Xbox will sport Blu-Ray so it's Xbox all the way next time to me. I have both systems right now and I'd rather just condense down to one.

Well, hold on, Microsoft made Xbox, so I'm pretty sure if you wanted to find time to play the Xbox exclusive titles, you could always get them from Windows games (except for the Kinect). I dont follow much of PC gaming world, but dont they have Mass Effect 3 for the PC? So if an Xbox is your choice just for exclusives, then maybe check out the PC version of them? The PS3 exclusives arent available on the PC. That I know of..

I can't believe you are abandoning PC gaming. PC gaming is far better than console gaming.

There is more variety. You can get emulators for old school stuff, so you don't need to worry if your machine is backwards compatible. You have to use your machine for other stuff like going online, anyway. You can get tons of user-generated content for free. If anything, get two machines, but never give up your PC.

    I honestly prefer the 360.

The PS3 is a great console, however. It has some major advantages like it being MORE than "just a console" with it being a great media centre as well as free to play online. Blu ray is amazeballs, instead of having multiple discs for big games like on the 360, it's condensed onto the one single disc. Plus the PS3 doesn't laser burn onto the discs lol.

But at the end of the day, while those things are all cool and all, the 360 is more of a gaming console to me personally. It costs to play online, but all of my friends on there so it is definitely worth it. I love the exclusives over the PS3 exclusives and the Kinect is so much better than the Playstation Move in my opinion.

Seeing as how you are going from PC to a console, I'd lay my bets on getting one of the new slimline 360 consoles... as long as you aren't going to be too miffed if all the rumours are true and they're releasing a new console shortly :flowerforyou:

Well I'm not really "abandoning" PC gaming. I'm just not going to upgrade to another gaming PC when this one craps out. PC is significantly more expensive than console, even when you factor in the costs of something like Xbox Live. And it's at the point now where I'm playing Skyrim on lower graphics settings, and games like Mass Effect 3 and Bioshock Infinite are probably going to require lower graphics settings as well. Thankfully, I'm easily surpassing the recommended specs for Diablo 3, so there's no issue there.

But it's clear that I'll have to get a new system soon. And I could get a 250GB 360 + Kinect + 2 controllers for under $400... or I could spend another $1000 on another PC. I'd really rather go 360/Kinect + iPad for the $1000 and keep my PC for older games. Until I win the lottery, of course.

My money is on the 360. Better yet just wait til after E3(Electronic Entertainment Expo) in a few months. I believe there are new consoles coming down the pipe. Nintendo with there Wii-U, Microsoft with "Durango"(codename), and what ever Sony puts out. There even rumors another company that's getting into the console business that is going to announce something at E3. PC gamers know this company very well. :-)

I own both and I never turn on my ps3 except to play blurays, I don't think I have played a game on it since MGS4 came out. I just can't stand not being able to chat with others that are not playing the same game. COD or BF3 is impossible to play with a big group on PS3 lol If you don't make it into a game and the others do, no one notices because you can no longer talk to them lol

Xbox live is awesome, it's fast with a tonne of options and you don't have to install games to hard drive just to play....That kills me lol getting a new game and ripping it open and then waiting and watching a bar fill and then finding out I need to delete an older game just to play the new one!

    A year or 2 ago I'd say the 360.

But I wouldn't spend a lot of a new system because this generation is coming to a close. However if you really don't want to wait, you should but used if you really want to get a system now.

Halo, GOW, Fable are just a few of the great exclusives they have. PS does have some great exclusives too(so I'm told) but I don't think they have anything close to the games mentioned above.

One other thing: Sony's controller blows chunks all over the place. Unless you have the hands of a fiver year old boy, you won't like it. If you don't believe me, go play COD or any other shooter on both systems and you will see how the smaller PS# controller makes it more difficult.

The kinect works great too. No controller makes and speech recognition makes it superior to the Wii and PS3 imo.

I have a 360 and I love it, haven't had a playstation since the first one and have no intention of doing. Really want kinect myself. Weigh it up by the games you want.

Welp, depending on the level of artisitc quality and story driven beauty youre into (if you want an expeirence rather than some shoot em up game) you need to get Journey for the PSN. Like seriously. Anything from 'That Game Company' is artistic and innovative. This one is no exception, and it's multiplayer is revolutionary. There is no communication, other than little musical notes you can make. The longer you press the button, the louder the note is. You communicate using these notes, so its up to the other player to decide what you're trying to tell or show him. The story in itself is so interesting and amazing. Anyone who has a PS3 CANNOT miss out on this title.

..Assuming youre still searching for a system....

If you're jonesing for Ico/SotC- then go buy a used PS2 for fifty bucks AND get an Xbox w/Kinect.

I own both systems and love them like my kids- so no favoritism either way.

They look and play like crap on PS2. I would never settle for less than the remasters, now that they exist.

Is that not part of the charm? It's how Silent Hill got it's start.

Personally, I think most games look like crap- I'm hard to impress apparently.

I have PS3, XBox and WII.
The PS3 has Blueray which is pretty awesome.
The PS3 is also quiet, which is nice.
The PS3 can also handle 3D games.

XBox has Kinect which is great and a decent workout(but not the actual workout games).
XBox also has game to game audio chat, so you can be playinh Halo, and someone else Call of Duty, but you can still chat with each other. In PS3, you have to be playing the same game and the game has to have chat functions.

Wii is cheap and of course has the classic Nintendo games.

I like PS3, but my teen likes XBOX.

A year ago hands down ps3. My original xbox died, so i had a grudge for awhile but got a newer version that has no issues. Now? That is a tough choice. Kinect is my favorite for motion control. You want those games, then 360. However, I dont like xbox live and getting charged. So if online gaming is your thing and you want it free then ps3. Blu ray on ps3 is great. So hard. I have all 3. If i had to choose which one to keep. . . 360.
