I don't think there is a hard and fast rule on this, but here's my opinion.

7 years at a minimum, which is approximately one generation in the dating/mating world. 10 years + has more of the cougar effect. Mindset and life stages also have an impact as well. A 35 year old woman who has never had kids has a different life perspective than a 35 year old woman that has two kids.

Technological change, which is becoming even more rapid, is changing the way that people of different ages relate to one another. I have friends that are significant older or significant younger than I am. Some of my younger friends can't remember a world where the Internet didn't exist or key episodes of The Simpsons from the 1990s.

I am interested to read what others have to say.

I think the perspective piece is key - I currently date someone 7 yrs younger than me he is divorced with a kid and same with me. It works because we have a lot in common plus lik you said the perspective is the same on life.

You can't be a cougar until you're in your mid-30's. From there, seeking out guys more than 15 years younger would make you a cougar. It isn't that you're dating someone, cougars attack.

So 14 years younger is ok - perfect!!!
  • i guess I'm just out of the loop. I always thought a cougar was a woman who had a younger man. not that she goes after younger men... I guess that would make more sense. Cougars attack as in prey on younger men... sex-maniac... like? hmmm... so it's okay if a younger man is attracted to me and I go out with him as long as I'm not chasing him.... then I'm not a cougar... :noway: I still feel a bit uncomfortable when younger men approach me. I'm 47 for heavens sake! I could be your mom... older sister!!! (yes, the mom one came out because I was approached by a 'boy' of 25! OMGosh!!! :noway:

This is an interesting thread to read. I always thought it was a woman in her 40's that had a child. Interestingly enough, I get hit on a lot by this type of woman. I have since I was about 27.

Haha that's what I was going to say.. for me at 32 I'd have to go after a 17 year old. Yuck!

But he did say mid 30's so at 35, it'd be a 20 year old so at least he's of legal age. Still yuck!

Wow, some interesting answers here. I always thought a cougar was an older woman with a younger man. I didnt think there was a specific age gap. Nor any relevance to kids. Or attack!!

So, even though I have dated younger men, I have never attacked one. Quite the opposite, its' always the other way round. So I'm not a cougar then?

I must admit, I dont FEEL like a cougar! But at my age, I guess I am one :noway: My last dating attempt was with a guy 13 years younger....hmmm!! But we had/have so much in common, especially music! I dont have children. He's older thinking than I am!! I dunno.........

Maybe the urban dictionary has a definition?

    LOL!! Funny thread....
