It's really kinda different for everyone. You've lots of different choices to get to where you want to be, it's up to you to figure out what is going to make you happiest. Some people feel the need to obliterate them completely (but may therefore fall of the wagon once the "diet" is over, because they didn't make a lifestyle change), others substitute & make different choices, others plan it in.
Try thinking which do you want more? Super slim sexy you for life or a 5 min sugar rush? Try visualizing it every time to see if you're really hungry and need them or if you can do without. It's not so much about denying yourself, but about making positive choices which are rewarding yourself because they get you closer to your goal.
Or you could try weaning, by using substitutes such as raisins (still high sugar so should be only occasional).
Course you could say screw it and just work out so you still have a deficit.
If you're still finding it tough you might have to ask yourself some really tough questions like:
Do I really want to be thin?
Why would I not want to be thin / what might I be scared of? i.e. failure, people thinking of me differently.
Why do I eat sweets? Is it an emotion? Stress, anger, loneliness. Remember sweets everyday are 5mins of happy, but life time of big unhappy.
Are you addicted to sugar? i.e. caught in a constant cycle of energy highs and lows, with headaches when you don't have some

Use it to your advantage, and make sweets your reward - if you have a 1700 cal limit then eat to that and replace your calories burnt during exercise with a few reward sweets. Target met and you've satisfied your sweet tooth.
I decided to not buy sweets/biscuits when shopping, as then when I want sweets there's none in the house!0 -
I've read the word 'sweets' and now I want some......be gone, foul temptation!0

Yeah, i tend to do the same. I don`t buy any sweets or crisps so that i wont be tempted to eat. Because once i`ve started eating, i cant stop. I cant start a bag of crisps and leave some for the next day. Probably never done that. The same happens with any kind of sweets... But sometimes i feel the urge of having something different than just fruits or nuts and if i don`t have , then i eat whatever i find in the house. And i do mean anything and everything . Sometimes i just cant control it. I had noticed it that i eat more -(crap)- when i`m stressed, angry or feel lonely...So its all emotional with me. Thought maybe to see a specialist, or a hypnotist...;)0

I do eat them if I really want them - but I always enter them into my diary *first*, giving me a bit of a pause to think about whether I really, really want to use my cals that way.
However, I also find that strawberries, black cherries, mango and pineapple all act as very good curbs on my sweet tooth.0
