Patella strap/ running tights feaux pas?

Hello,
My physical therapist recently suggested I start wearing a patella strap. I've been testing it out- and will admit that it seems to be helping my knee a bit.
I just have one question... When you wear the strap with running tights, do you wear it OVER the tights? (My logic tells me yes- but I didn't know if I would have trouble with it slipping). I pulled out my tights in preparation for a morning race this weekend and realized I've never tested the strap with pants- I don't want to look like a fool
