trail shoes

I want to start getting more into trail running-- there's a 50K trail race I want to do in late Oct so I want to start getting used to the different terrain over the next few months. I do most of my running on pavement and hit the treadmill up for sprints so I currently wear the Nike Lunarfly. I underpronate and have really high arches, so they've been great for me. THere's not much to them, though, so I don't think they'll last on a trail.
What kinds of things should I look for in a trail shoe?

I also love the Lunaryfly...I have three pair now and am itching to get the Lunarfly 3 that Nike just released. I believe that the Lunarfly 2 comes in a "trail" version. Should be able to get some good deals since the 3 just released!

I'll look into those, thanks! I don't like the 2nd version as much as I loved my first pair but maybe the trail version will fit better. I'm not even really sure what to look for in a trail shoe-- I'm just worried that everything's going to seem so heavy and bulky after the lunarflys.

I still love my original pair, but I currently run in the "Breathe" Lunarfly 2....very light and comfortable. My training loop takes me on paved and dirt roads with one stretch of road that is not very well maintained. :) My Nikes serve me well, though. :)

The type of trail shoe you go for depends partly on the types of trail you arre planning to run. Generally you want a good deep tread but one that won't clog with mud. Personally I'd avoid any goretex as whilst they're ok for the odd splash, once water gets in they become like lead weights. I mostly use Adidas Kanadia and I'm on my third pair.

Trail shoes should be very snug, running up and down hills you dont want your feet sliding about as you will get very sore toes very quickly! It's also worth noting that trail shoes tend to have softer soles so i f you start running on the road in them they are likely to wear out quicker than a normal running shoe.

You mention weight, you can go as minimalist as you want with trail shoes and most tend to be pretty lightweight anyway.

As with any shoe, try different pairs and if you can find a shop that specialises in off road, it's well worth a visit.

Thank you! This is exactly the type of info I'm looking for!
