New to being vegan

Hello all! I became a vegan a little over two weeks ago after watching Forks over Knives. I am about to watch Earthlings so I am sure that will solidify my views! I was a vegetarian for about 4 years and knew if I ever became actively "aware" of what was happening to animals, I would have to change. I wasn't ready to give up eggs and cheese. Now, the thought of it actually makes me sick and I don't miss it at all. I eat very healthy and try not to eat any processed food or at least a very limited amount. I thought I would be embarrassed because people are so judgmental and I tend to try to make people happy but no, I am proud of my choice and will stand up for it. I do not judge others for what they believe either but will make my opinion known if it is wanted. Anyway, enough of my rant. I would love to meet new friends that live the same lifestyle for support and encouragement so feel free to add me. Good luck in all your journeys through my fitness pal and through life!

Good for you! I've been vegan for about a year and a half now and love it. Haters will always hate, but we know better

Cheers to you!! I'm also transitioning into Vegan from Vegetarian. Just believe in yourself, be true to yourself and all the other stuff becomes minor :)

    Hi!

I've decided to become vegan... I thought about it for a while, but yeah I guess I let other peoples views and stuff get in the way.

I've always worked in catering/with food - however now I've moved to NZ doing my PhD in human health and nutrition, aside from the ethical issues, I also believe that it's a healthy and sustainable lifestyle. I tend to cook a lot for others, but when I cook for myself I make a lot of vegetarian dishes. So I guess making the transition won't be too hard - I don't eat a lot of dairy to begin with and there are substitutes out there.

I've never tried tofu... but in my head it looks like it should taste like feta (I know this isn't the case).

How have you found your first few weeks?

    So hi.. I'm Heather :)

    Congratulations!

I've been vegan for some years now, and keep an open diary to friends, occasionally post recipes... and smart alecky cracks about mean people.

Friend me if you like stuff.

    Vegan here...

Forks over Knives is a very good start. :)

I recommend the Happy Herbivore website &/or cookbook for a great primer on a bunch of great food!

I just recently became vegetarian and I would love to go vegan....but like you, I'm afraid of completely giving up eggs & cheese- I just love them! lol! Also, it seems like a chore to read every label and not buy anything that has milk...I dunno. I'm being a wimp, I'm sure! I sent you a request!

Thanks for all your replies! The first few weeks have been great. I have more energy than ever and I FEEL good. Megan- shopping is actually easier if you are looking to eat pretty much whole foods and i'm sure there are some awesome cookbooks out there. I know when I became a vegetarian I did it the wrong way and ate all unhealthy foods and gained 20 pounds. I now eat a lot of fruit and vegetables, grains, wraps, beans, etc. It is all really tasty if you know what to do with it. Maybe get a few cookbooks at your local library and see if it's something you think you can do?
