So, I woke up yesterday to my husband excitedly telling me that he had registered us for the Dakota Five-O this fall. "The what?" If you're anything like me, I had no idea what he was talking about. Once I had had enough coffee to get out of bed, I went to my laptop and began researching.
I found out that we would be competing with 600 other mountain bikers in a fifty-ish mile race through the Black Hills of Spearfish, South Dakota. I'm sure that many of the competitiors are anxiously awaiting race day, but I will be shaking in my new Sidi's until September 2nd. I am a novice mountain biker, at best. This event is scaring the crap out of me. On top of training for two 100 mile road and off road races this summer, I have this beast to prepare for as well.
Don't get me wrong, I am excited, but am worried that I won't be experienced enough after the next 5 months of training to finish the race. I am telling myself that I will do this race, I will finish and I will work my *kitten* off to get there in one piece, but I will also need the advice and support of my fellow trail blazers.
If you are familiar with the Minneapolis area, my skill set thus far has allowed me to make it through Elm Creeks trails and Theo Wirth (except for the small rock garden or the advanced area). I know that I will get better as I practice more, but I think my fear is holding me back. I am a surgical assistant and if I break anything from my shoulders down, I won't be able to work.
On top of the endurance and skills needed to complete said race, I really need to drop about 30lbs to get to ideal race weight. This is all part of the reason I'm on MFP, but I know that I will kill myself on many of the climbs that this course offers, and there are many of them. Trail Statistics Minimum elevation: 3629 feet Maximum elevation: 6128 feet Elevation gain/loss: 7594 feet I live at about 800 ft about sea level and I'm worried that the elevation will wear me out fast.
Give me any advice you can, and if you have any pointers on getting over cold feet, please help a sister out. Oh, and wish me luck!
