People donated money to this woman who said she had a terminal illness.
Now assuming this is completely true and totally proven, should she go to jail? Community service? Pay back every penny? What do you think the appropriate punishment for this crime should be?

I think the marriage should be annulled and she should have to pay back every cent as WELL as do community service.

That would be a good second chance for her to do it the right way!

I would assume this kind of fraud is illegal, but I don't know. So yes, however many thousand hours cleaning bed pans for a hospice in lieu of jail time and paying back all the money seems reasonable.

Yes, technically it's fraud and I believe if it were proven that her husband had no prior knowledge of the deception he could sue for an annulment of their marriage.

There have been similar cases here in the UK over the years, one of the most recent was a woman who claimed her daughter had gone missing, possibly abducted and this got splashed over the media and she made a good few £000 selling her story....

.... until the police found her daughter alive and well, albeit somewhat groggy from Calpol, at her Uncle's house and the whole thing had been a deception with intent to illicit funds.

It wouldn't have been half as sick had it not happened soon after a couple of high-profile, but very genuine cases of abduction and murder.
