Haven't played in a while bro. Had a level 50 guardian on Arkenstone a while ago. I think you'd need to spend some kind of money to get the full potential of it.0

Yea, we play it on and off, mostly off because there are whole areas you cant even quest into or do anything in without paying for the xpac or the monthly game. Any/everything good is paid for. Really hard to end-game if you dont pay either item by item or montly.0

It IS possible to play the game to End Game without paying for anything. You can do this by earning Turbine Points in game for completing Traits and Deeds. However, its a bit of a grind and its not the most economical way of doing it.
I would suggest buying one or two of the quest packs (and they are often on offer) for two reasons. Firstly, its stops all your need to grind, but secondly and more importantly, it makes you a "premium player" and with that you get more character slots, bags, higher gold limit etc. You only have to buy one thing in store to become a premium player. Once you have bought a quest pack, it is yours for good and you do not have to pay any extra monthly fees etc to maintain it.
I would not recommend you buy anything else in the store aside from the quest packs. You can get to level 20+ without any quest packs and getting full access to all quests in the intial areas. In the later areas you have the "epic quests" (main plot) available to you and the deeds / traits. You can also access monster play.
I'd give it a go and see if you like it. It certainly costs nothing to try and it would cost nothing at all to get to 20+ and you would see the game to that point just like I would (I'm a lifer).0
