"Folk" costumes?

One of my goals is to make a costume for medieval events. I'm not a huge stickler for costumes that are historically accurate to specific periods, but I want something nice. And something that will cover my stretch marked belly. I've thought about ghawazhee coats--for all that they're fairly modern--but I was wondering if you guys had any ideas.

This is a good article on the subject: http://www.shira.net/costuming/sca-faire.htm

Unfortunately, the "accurate" clothing isn't super attractive or flattering. It depends on the event, but for an example, at a Ren Faire, I don't mind going full fantasy with something along the lines of this: http://www.simplicity.com/p-2230-costumes.aspx (the larger picture). Or something like that blended with something a little tribal-y. My Saidi dress is way too sparkly, but I'd make something similar to it in a plainer fabric, if I wanted to be a little more accurate, but still dance-able.

I completely agree! I think gawazi coats are pretty close, especially if you use the current offering from simplicity http://www.simplicity.com/p-6171-misses-costumes.aspx the big one and use a more period hair covering.

Wow, thank you both for the specific pattern info--I really do appreciate it.

I had seen some more authentic stuff sketched, but it looked horribly unflattering by modern standards. (Think parachute pants and layered t-tunics.) I would rather go "tribal-y."
