Is it weird to bring a same-sex friend to a wedding?

One of my best friends from work is getting married in July. It happens to be the same week that my best friend from my hometown (several states away) is coming out for a visit. I would feel terrible about missing the wedding and equally terrible about leaving my friend alone for the Saturday night. Is it okay to ask if I can bring my friend instead of a date, and would that just be totally weird? The bride said to let her know if I wanted to bring anyone.

    I would! Just tell the bride the situation. I brought a same sex friend to a work party one time where we could have a date and it was fine!
