wearing in new running shoes

I have a pair of running shoes on layby. I'm thinking of picking them up today as I live out in the country and my shoes are on layby in a store in the city. I'm currently in the city today and I don't know when I will be back again to pick them up (most likely june), and I would like to pick them up before I do a race in July.
So my question is about wearing them in how.
How far would you run with your new shoes the 1st time you wear them, and there after.
Also how long should it take to break in.
TIA

I won't race in them the first time but a normal 3-5 mile will let you know how they will come in. Personal preference on how many miles before you race in them; I've run that week or put a couple hundred on before I take them out. Just depends on how you feel in them.0

best advice I've received (& follow) is to rotate your shoes; so have at least 2 pairs - so don't throw your old ones away !
you'll get to know which pair you prefer pretty quickly.
worst case, rotating gives each pair of shoes time to 'breathe' & 'recover' b/n runs - apparently it increases the life of your shoes as well.0 -
As above always have two pair of shoes on the go.
When I break in a new pair I wear them around the house for a week or so then gradually increase the distance I run in them.0 -
PicKed up new shoes last Friday, went for a walk that arvo,4km run and fitness evaluation the next day and did 8kms today... Didn't feel like the needed to be broken in at all0

Usually how I break in new shoes is to walk in them a bit, then run on the treadmill a few times, then short runs outside.0 -
I also have a pair of nike free's, which i love but imo are good for walking and short distances (like 3-5km).
If I could afford to buy another pair of running shoes I would, but alas for the time being I can't.0 -

I don't have a "break in" time for my shoes, they are ready to go straight out of the box. I expect to be able to rotate new shoes into my schedule whether the first run in them is 3 miles or 10. If the shoe is right, wearing it shouldn't result in pain or blisters.
In my experience, the exception to this is transitioning to a minimalist shoe (i.e. VFF). But running in minis is a completely different experience than a shoe with support/cushion. Even then the shoe shouldn't result in discomfort anywhere or require breaking in.0
