A thrilless thriller?

Being a huge fan of Edgar Allan Poe I can say that I was more than excited to check out the new film, The Raven. As some of you may know it stars John Cusack and Luke Evans and is directed by John McTeigue of V for Vendetta fame.

Let me just say that at the end of the film the excitement that I went in with didn't leave with me. I can't say that I hated the film but I certainly can't say that I loved it either. The script just seems to coast along from beginning to end with no rise and fall and no real climax. When the "climax" does happen it isn't gripping or thrilling as one would expect in a thriller. The acting at times seems melodramatic with the characters imploring a sense of urgency that just simply isn't there. There is one scene in the film that feels like the same scene written twice just placed in two different locations. The saddest part about this movie is when Poe and the police discover who the killer is, I found myself not caring in the least bit.

While the movie does have its faults it does shine in some areas especially in those moments when they find the clues and realize that the killer isn't only leaving clues for Poe but he is also leaving clues for the audience to figure out as well. After all has been said and done I found myself wanting more. Wanting more not because the movie was great but because I felt that it was missing something.

Would I recommend this film to a friend? Probably not.

I was tempted to go see it because I'm a Poe fan but I didn't know how they would visalize his poetry in a movie. I decided against it and now I'm glad I didn't see it after reading this.
