Giro D'Italia Challenge - 21 days in May

Okay – so as some of you may have noticed, I tend to like my cycling with an Italian flavour. And, seeing as the best race in the world is starting this weekend, I wondered if anyone fancied a little Giro D’Italia based challenge. I don’t want to hijack anyone elses challenge, and am happy for this to run in parallel with any other stuff going on, but I just thought it was a interesting twist…
What I propose is that as a team of 9 riders we try and ride between us a distance each day equal to or greater than the distance of that day’s stage in the Giro D’Italia. The person in the team who rides the largest total km’s gets the Maglia Rosa, the person achieving the fastest average speed overall gets the Maglia Rossa (red sprinters jersey) and the person who posts the highest total ascent figure in metres gets the Maglia Verde (green climbers jersey) – we could even have a Cima Coppi for the person who posts the highest ascent in a single ride!
The stages for this race, and distances involved are as follows…
1 Saturday, May 5 8.7 km Herning (DK)
2 Sunday, May 6 206 km Herning (DK) → Herning (DK)
3 Monday, May 7 190 km Horsens (DK) → Horsens (DK)
Tuesday, May 8 Rest day
4 Wednesday, May 9 32.2 km Verona → Verona
5 Thursday, May 10 199 km Modena →
6 Friday, May 11 207 km Urbino → Porto Sant’Elpidio
7 Saturday, May 12 202 km Recanati → Rocca di Cambio
8 Sunday, May 13 229 km Sulmona → Lago Laceno
9 Monday, May 14 171 km San Giorgio nel Sannio → Frosinone
10 Tuesday, May 15 187 km Civitavecchia → Assisi
11 Wednesday, May 16 243 km Assisi → Montecatini Terme
12 Thursday, May 17 157 km Seravezza → Sestri Levante
13 Friday, May 18 121 km Savone → Cervere
14 Saturday, May 19 205 km Cherasco → Cervinia
15 Sunday, May 20 172 km Busto Arsizio → Lecco/Pian dei Resinelli
Monday, May 21 Rest day
16 Tuesday, May 22 174 km Limone del Garda → Falzes
17 Wednesday, May 23 187 km Falzes → Cortina d'Ampezzo
18 Thursday, May 24 139 km San Vito Cadore → Vedelago
19 Friday, May 25 197 km Treviso → Alpe di Pamepago
20 Saturday, May 26 218 km Caldes → Passo dello Stelvio
21 Sunday, May 27 31.5 km Milan → Milan
Total Distance 3476.4km
3476.4km for 9 people is an average of around 387km - or just under 240 miles in 19 days. Should be do-able I reckon...
(for those of you not used to continental measures, multiply by 0.621 for miles!)
To verify the distances/speeds/ascents rides would need to be logged via some form of GPS and posted to appropriate websites, e.g. Strava / Garmin Connect / Endomondo. As I’d be looking at average speeds and climbs, I think that it’s only appropriate to restrict this challenge to outdoor mileage only.
So – anyone up for a challenge ??

Sounds like fun. I have a century ride coming up; my riding regime immediately prior and post ride (very very light) probably bump me of this.0
-
Count me in, i got to get some big training miles in ready for the Wiggle Dragon ride in June.0
-
It might be a bit hard for the 2 - 3 of us to handle it...
I'll take stages 1,4 and 21, if thats any help :laugh:0 -
Not looking good for this one, I'm afraid - as the race starts tomorrow... Pity - I was hoping that it could be first in a themed series for the 3 grand tours...
Shame :frown:0 -
No worries - it's a bit of a shame, but no big deal - I doubt I'll bother unless I get a late flurry of entries tonight anyway - i'm averaging around 50km a ride, 3 days from 4, but it's a big step up to 200+km a day average for 19 days out of 21, between 2-3 of us!0

Probably go for my favourite 20 miler tomorrow, any links for the race?0

Have a look tomorrow on http://www.steephill.tv/giro-d-italia/#preview and click the TV link - there's usually 3-4 different feeds in english (eurosport Stage 1: live from 15.30 to 19.30 Stage 2: live from 15.15 to 17.30 Stage 3: live from 14.45 to 16.15), or if you Slinga-Da-Lingo, the GazettaTV feed in Italian0

Well - Giro Challenge never happened - wonder if we can start planning something similar for LeTour - just to add a little interest in July ? Oh and if we do - fair warning, I may not ride on Bastille day, as it's my birthday, and will probably experience a "Jour Sans" on the 15th due to a surfeit of bierre et red wine!0

July would probably work for me, as I'll have more time off that month. My schedule is going to be really bad in June. Happy birthday early, in case I forget...0
-
I think it sounds like fun but July is a much better month for me also - I like doing the TdF - I am hoping we can start on July 1 as I begin a short week long tour of Oregon...be great to take advantage of the miles I will be doing anyway!0
-
I'm interested...but unfortunately have no GPS0
-
Hmm. . . I was thinking about something similar yesterday. I think I might do something in July, too.0

Glad it's getting a bit more of a thumbs up this time. I'll start a new thread with the stage details etc. sometime this evening if I get a chance, and I'll be taking names and handing out race numbers - don't forget, if you get the 13, you need to wear it upside down, to counteract the bad luck0

Just a thought - there are a number of app's for modern mobile phones (android/iPhone) including the rather wonderful Strava Cycling application - which would also give you the option of joining the MFP Strava Cycling Team - GS MyFitnessPal...0 -
