Gloves & Deadlift

Last night I was attempting to do our deadlifts (160lbs) I managed 3 of them but it was causing shooting pains on my knuckles. Has anybody experience this? I think I maybe starting to get arthritis in those fingers, so it may be related to that. Would gloves help? Any other recommendations?

    mixed grip?
at lower weights I will still use a hook grip, but as it gets up in the 200's hook hurts.

I'm not a fan of gloves, but not sure they will give you relief in your knuckles?

I agree, try a mixed grip and see if that helps. Also, your arms and hands should not be moving at all while you are lifting, they should just be holding the weight. If that doesn't help maybe you can try straps.

    Yep. This.

I have found gloves only help with the palms of the hands, but I haven't actually used mine in a couple of weeks now that my grip has improved.

I'm going to have to try mixed grip. I'm lifting bodyweight and my grip is failing. I prefer not to glove, just allow my grip to catch up, but most people move to mixed grip at some point when they start getting into the higher weights.

Make sure when you set up for the deadlift that you grip the bar where it will end up - if you grip it higher in your palm it WILL slide down as you pull. It should be against the base of your fingers where they meet the palm.

But no I haven't experienced the knuckle issues either. I'm not sure gloves would help with that but they actually MIGHT in this one situation - usually they're not recommended because they make the bar larger by adding diameter and thus harder to grip, but if that would help your knuckles not hurt, then it might be a good thing.

I wear gloves when I deadlift but no, I don't think it would help the pain your are describing.

The only thing I would consider that might help would be if the gloves have a wrist wrap included and you use a mix grip. That way you aren't gripping harder in an effort to protect your wrists. Also the idea of starting where you think the bar will end up is an excellent one!.

That being said the only relief I've gotten from gloves is protection of my skin and with padding it seems to help protect my hands from bruising.
