I have been a tomboy all my life. My sister tried and tried to turn me into a girl but I just wouldn't have it. Now that I have grown up, I find myself wanting to look pretty and I really don't know how. In addition, my 7 yr old daughter is as girly girl as they get, and I can't teach her what I don't know. What advice can you give? How do I better learn about fashion to help my daughter?

I think the best way to get started is to get a fashion magazine, or google 'current fashion trends' ... start getting an idea of what styles you like. Pinterest is really great for perusing fashion ideas too. Once you start getting a good idea of what kinds of outfits or trends call to you, it will be easier to start focusing your efforts and building a wardrobe.

As a some what tomboy myself I'd encourage you to not go completely girly all at once. You'll feel funny and then just revert back to you old ways. First, find ways that make your current style slightly more feminine. I wore men's T-shirts and jeans in college, I replaced them with women's jeans and nice fitted V-neck Ts instead of jumping right into sun dresses. I still can't really do a lot of floral or anything, so I generally stick to solid colors. I also wear a lot of fitted button downs, but with jewelry or girly shoes. If you can't walk in heels yet get some lower ones or some comfortable wedges. Make slow gradual changes.

Take her shopping with you and let her pick some things out for you to try on.

Spend some time trying on cute sunglasses, hats, etc.

Oh, and buy yourself a wrap dress because it looks good on everyone (so you don't have to worry about whether or not it works if you aren't that girly), is feminine, and is comfortable enough that you won't feel awkward in it as you get used to the girly things in life.

What Rae said. I'm very much a tomboy, and just the subtle difference between the way a t-shirt cut is for a guy and one for a girl can make a huge difference.

So the tomboy uniform of jeans and a tee can still look put together and feminine if you have flattering jeans and a fitted shirt. Add cute shoes and some jewelry and you're instantly girlie.

Personally, the shoes are where my outfits fall apart. I love love love cute shoes, but they don't fit my lifestyle. I'm not going to wear cute ballet flats on a hike/walk with my dog, and I'm not going to change my shoes a dozen times throughout the day as I change activities like Mr. Rogers. Plus, I've had lots of foot/ankle problems, so comfort is king. But I'll at least try to get semi-cute athletic shoes. My pink and black Saucony sneakers aren't as stylish as a pair of wedges, but it's better than feeling like I look like Jerry Seinfeld when I wear my white trainers with jeans.

No worries, my fellow tomboys, I will always be a tomboy at heart. I just don't want to necessarily look like one ALL the time... My I don't care style as a teen caught me a lot of hell. But I am venturing some, I have learned that while my daughter looks absolutely cute in anything she puts on... If my gut tells me no... stick with it. She picked out this zebra print pair of shoes for me, and while they were cute I guess, they were hard on my feet.
