Is there such a thing as big boned?

I personally don't think so. You either need to lose weight or you don't. or you have muscles.

You?

I think I'm big boned. I'm not a petite girl at all. I'm tall and even if I got to goal weight, I'd still be bigger than most girls.. my same pant size.

Heavy big yummy bones here in this body.

I think so, but I also think a lot of people use it as an excuse to be overweight.

For me, I'm like my mom. We're nearly the same height, we look alike, etc. When she was my age, she was a twig. But I think that I have bigger bones all around compared to my mom - like La Amazona said, I would still wear a larger pant size even if I had a flat stomach. I've lost about 50 pounds, have gained a little back, and I only went down one pant size.

But my best friend from high school was just bigger all around - big hips, thighs, breasts, etc. She had a larger frame, and if she got too skinny she looked too weird. She had a flat stomach and wore a bikini, and looked good in it. But her frame was just larger overall. I would call her big boned.

I'm 5'10 with a size 11 shoe. I can palm a basketball. I'd really like for there to be some explanation for this. I can also wear a size 10 pant/M shirt at 200#. That being said, I used to use my "big bones" as an excuse. I think it exists but many people who say they're big boned are usually no different than the masses. Large frames, however, are totally legit.

I think there is such a thing but I think it's over used as an excuse. I'll probably go into maintenance mode when I get to 260 lbs. The height weight charts say my ideal is about 195-200. I don't think there's a chance in hell I can or should weigh that little. Some of that is muscle. I used to lift compettiviely and it was common for me to lift weights 4 hours a day 5 days a week at one time. A lot of it is my frame though. I wear a size 14 shoe. My hands are big enough you can't see a soda can when I hold it. I am also much wider across the shoulders than most guys my height.

I think it is overused, but is actually true.
I know this because a friend is doing a special diet through her doctor and the paperwork asks bone size and she of course said large, but after the testing, determined she is medium boned.

I have the perfect answer for that but I'm afraid it would be inappropriate for some viewers.

I'm confused. Was she convinced there was or was not such a thing as being big boned at that point?

To me, being big-boned means being tall or having a wider frame, e.g. broad shoulders or wide-set hips. You can be big-boned and still be thin. A lot of female athletes fit in this category. But I definitely agree that a lot of people use it as an excuse for being fat.

I don't even know what that means.

I don't think it was really that funny anyway. The PG-13 version would be "My boner disagrees"

There IS such a thing. Determined by wrist measurement usually.

A skeleton isnt one size of bone. But the visual 'siz'e of someone isnt necessarily any indication of their bone density. Like you say, it can be muscle and/or fat. EG A big guy can have small bones and small woman can have big bones. It's purely genetic.

Here's a table if you want to determine yours: -

Frame size varies greatly, and this is probably the number one reason that I call the standard BMI scale crap. I would be anorexic at the weight they consider healthy for my height.

it's true but overused. there is such a thing as differences in frame size but i think too many people use that as an excuse to be too overweight for their body.

It does exist...I however, have never been able to claim it as an excuse lolol. My bones are quite small and delicate :grumble:

Yes it's all about frame size. And it is definitely overused as an excuse.

Well, according to my doctor, I have "big bones". This has nothing to do how fat or skinny I am, it just basically means it would take more effort to brake one (so I see it as a positive).

I am also large framed, which again, has nothing to do with fat. It's just that I will never be considered "petite" however thin I get, as I have the shape of a linebacker.

But yes, I have used both as an excuse in the past for why I was overweight and I find many women do.

I have since seen the light (lol) and being just shy of 5'10'', I'm now at 154lbs, 20.6% BF (down 1% since April 2nd) and working to get at 19.5% which would be considered "excellent" for my age and size. Will I ever be 120lbs: no...and who cares because I'll be a mean lean lifting machine... :)

I think it exiists but is over used as an excuse. But for me personally, I KNOW that there is no way my body will EVER be a size 2. Likely never even a size 6. When I've lost weight, I do get thinner on top. But through the hips/butt - not gonna happen. I am very pear shaped and while it's certainly possible to shrink it a bit, I just don't have the build (bones??) to allow for being a toothpick.

It is over-used, but yes, it does exist. If you look at the diversity in wrist-size in the population, for example - an area where excess weight is generally less inclined to be deposited except in the severely obese, it is clear that frame/bone-size is highly variable. I have no excess weight around my wrists, but have never been able to buy a bracelet-style watch, because they are designed for the wrist of someone with average-size bones/frame. I also have shoulders that are nearly twice the width of my petite/small-boned friends who are the same height. My frame/bones are quite simply larger than theirs. Babies are born different weights after the same gestational period primarily because of genetic variations in frame.

I hope it is so I'd have an excuse as to why my skull is so large. And the more weight I drop, the larger my head looks.
