Aspie intensity level?

My son Austin is 4 and recently started speaking. I cannot explain how elated we are! He's still difficult to understand sometimes but he's SPEAKING! Here's where I'm a bit lost, and honestly struggling. I know this is more me than anything. The intensity level is through the roof. Everything is an emergency, everything is LOUD! I'm know the intensity is at least partially related to how excited he his with his new skill. About 20 times a day I have a mini heart attack and take off running. Nothing is wrong of course but I feel like I'm stuck in some reactionary mode. He'll be chatting away, Mach 10, asking for whatever and it's so RAWR that he doesn't hear answers. It's the repeater...over and over and over. I'm so happy and anxious at the same time. I guess I just hope some of you have experience with this. I want to be able to step back and enjoy every second of this instead of feeling panicky. Thank you!

I just want to say how pleased I am for you, my four year old has recently aquired some speech( poor pronounciation) but the joy at having a very basic conversation is wonderful, even at full volume :-) The only way is up!!

Thank you so much for the encouragement. It's joyous and gives us so much hope. He's having an absolute blast carrying on about everything! I think this one is just going to take a while for me to get used to. It's always an adventure!

I totally understand what you're saying - my Aspie son (now 8) still has 'loud times'. He's reminded to use his 'indoor voice' and its definitely improved over the last four years. Excitement is a major factor - if Ollie's excited he's VERY EXCITED!! I bet your little man is having a whale of a time making himself understood - it must be like wandering around in a foreign country for a few years and suddenly understanding how to speak the lingo.

All the best to you both

What a heart warming story, lovely to hear! My son is 8, possibly autistic-awaiting diagnosis and he is very loud!!! He had speech therapy when he was 6 and he is going back again after being discharged 2 yrs ago. One thing Ive noticed is his voice is either very monotone and quiet, like he's mumbling or high pitched and loud. If I ask him to repeat it he tells me off and says "no, I never say the same thing twice!!"! I think thats his way of airing his frustration at not being understood!! When he gets excited his voice goes higher and higher and louder and louder!! Best of luck!!
