Hi there, I had a VSG (sleeve) Aug 16, 2010. I've done GREAT! Or so my surgeon and everyone else says. I lost 33% of excess weight and then nothing. I haven't lost and kept it off for over a year. I am on the waiting list for the Duodenal Switch, but have told myself and my family that if I can lose just 50lbs by the time my date comes, then I won't have it. It terrifies me. I know lots of successful people who have had the DS and love it to bits...but I just don't feel like it is right for me. So here I am.
My start weight was 640lbs. Lost 20 pre op. My weight now is 486. I am happy for the weight loss I did achieve as I was told there was over a 10% chance I would lose nothing at all with the sleeve. It is seriously depressing though when you are a part of WLS groups seeing people get hella thin losing under 100lbs when I still am double and at times triple the weight of people pre op.
I am here because for the last year I haven't lost and kept off anything. I made it down to 470 and then bounced back up and now I fluctuate between 480 and 495. I have edema in my legs and lympodema in my belly hang which means I can gain or lose 15lbs in less than 24 hours.....its all water...but still doesn't feel nice to see +15 on the scales.
I am also disabled. I have bone on bone osteoarthritis of both hips and both knees but am still too heavy for any replacements. I am determined to lose weight. I am working out 2+ hrs a day and journalling my food.
It's hard not to feel like a failure sometimes.
Thanks for having me!

I don't think you're a failure at all!! I call those people who lose their weight super fast, super easy "superachievers" -- and it IS frustrating to see THEIR stories plastered all over our surgeon's websites as if they are the norm.. they aren't. There are more of us who didn't quite make it as far as expected on surgery alone than there are of them.. and it's easy to miss that when you're faced with all this amazing success they have had..
You are doing what's right for you.. I don't know much about VGS or DS but I had a proximal RNY laporoscopically in 2004 when I weighed about 420 (390 on surgery day).. I dropped a volume of weight.. but not enough to get to goal.. the good thing for me and the reason I chose the RNY procedure over the band is because I still have my tool and I can still use it. I have to work harder at it, but at least it's POSSIBLE and that little glimmer of hope keeps me going.
Stay the course.. if you're considering a revision surgery or another type of WLS, research all the options -- maybe there's another option that IS right for you?
