Beta Blockers

Do any of you guys take Beta Blockers for blood pressure? I am taking diltizem for blood pressure and at one point I had heart palpatations. Basically, a beta blocker slows your heart rate and reduces blood pressue. My blood pressure is completely normal on the pill. Here is my question, if the drug is slowing my heart rate, does that mean it may be slowing my metabolism? I went back looking and noticed that I have struggled to lose weight since I started the pill. I should be losing 2 pounds a week and at the moment I struggling to lose 1 pound. In fact, I may even have a gain this week if the trend keeps going like it has.
I know I am not eating as clean as I should, but I lost a ton of weight five years ago on Weight Watchers eating whatever I wanted as long as I stayed in my points range.
So my question is, have any of you guys heard of this? I am half tempted to go off my meds and see if that makes a difference..maybe I should ask my doctor first.

You should definitely ask your doctor first. I wouldn't mess with blood pressure medication on my own.
I take metoprolol tartrate, which is a beta blocker (which I didn't know until just now when I looked it up). It's not for blood pressure, strictly speaking -- I had a weird heart issue a few years back and they put me on metoprolol and warfarin afterward. I successfully campaigned to get off the warfarin a year later, but I'm still on the metoprolol.
I've been taking it for over 3½ years, and during that time I've been able to lose weight. Within a few months of starting it, I began a program during which I lost 70 pounds over about five months. I've lost at various other times in the years since, and earlier this year I lost about 25 pounds as part of a seminar/boot camp program. In both cases (the 70-lb. loss and the 25-lb. loss) I made some pretty radical changes to my overall lifestyle.
The only thing I think I've noticed about metoprolol is that it seems to prevent me from getting my heart rate up toward my supposed maximum and/or sustaining it in optimal range for as long as I'd like. I haven't worn a heart rate monitor during exercise very often, but I did pretty frequently during boot camp, and I wasn't seeing the kind of rates I would have expected -- which I attributed to the metoprolol. Still, I was losing weight pretty reliably.
Talk to your doctor.0 -
I take something for high blood pressure which is more of a diuretic.... prescribed and dr controlled of course... so I don;t have you guy's problem but I would certainly never mess up with medications.... go see your dr and ask him. Honestly, he is the best one to answer.... not a bunch of people on MFP0

I have taken tenorimin for 2 years. This is beta blocker.I also take norvasc and cozarr for bloood pressure.I also have hard time with weightloss as being slower maybe 1 to 1 1/2 lbs per week.Talking with doc this pill is designed to slow heart rate down and lower blood pressure.Hence when i do cardio and try to get into different zones it usually is alot harder to get there.Hence not burning as many calories. When i talked with her i take meds in a.m. and work out early afternoon.Only thing she said would be to take beta blocker at 5:00 p.m. then it is in system more in evening.Have not tried it yet to see if it makes difference. As always this is just my opion, but would definitely continue to listen to youre doc first.Thanks0
