Shin splints....help!

I used to loathe running with a passion. Even in the military when I was running all the time I had this mental block about it that made me hate every second. I've gotten past that (mostly) and have tried to start running several times. My problem is that I have a VERY high arch and a very heavy footed gait because my foot doesn't roll properly. Due to this, after a hard run or several days of running, I develope intense pain in my shins that will only go away if I stop running. I've purchased shoes specifically for underpronation and try to make a conscious effort to strike with my heel first and roll my foot but nothing seems to help. Can anyone offer any other advice or should I accept that I'll never be a runner??

Before I give any advice I will tell you I am NO expert. I have only been running seriously for about 10 months. That being said I would take a little time and be sure that it is shin splints. If you have time go to runnersworld.com and search shin splints there is an article that was written in 2001, Shin Splints; Shin splints most often can be captured in just four words: too much, too soon that could help answer some questions and maybe give you some good ideas.
I hope this helps you out. I believe that everyone can be a runner! Don't ever give up.0
