Anyone else playing Dragon's Dogma? It came out last Tuesday, and I'm really enjoying the shiz out of it! It's kind of a cross between Skyrim and Dark Souls. The storyline is a little weak, but the combat is amazing! These aren't typically just "whack-whack-you're-dead" encounters. Even common mobs like bandits attack with purpose and organization, often laying traps or setting up ambushes where they benefit from higher ground, terrain cover and choke points.
There are much, MUCH larger targets as well. In fact, one of the combat mechanics of the game is to actually climb onto these ample denizens ala "Shadow of the Colossus" and wale away on weak points to bring it down. Darkness actually is SCARY in this game, and you don't want to be out in the middle of nowhere once the sun goes down!
There's a few rough spots here and there, but between the combat and the innovative "Pawn" system, there's plenty Capcom got right too! Check out some of the gameplay vids on YouTube, then go out and get the game! You can thank me later.

I'm glad to hear you're enjoying it. It's on my to-buy list for the future, but my backlog is too big at the moment to justify grabbing it just yet. I really liked the demo, and so did my wife.
Here's a weird question though - are there any friendly dragons in it? Maybe I should make a post about this topic alone.. But my wife really likes friendly dragons in games (just for example, she loves the Drakan games), and doesn't want to play the ones where you need to kill them. If there's at least both good and evil dragons, she won't mind as much. It's weird, I know... I don't understand it. lol But anyhow, are there good dragons in Dragon's Dogma, or is it just the one big dragon guy that talked to me in the demo that I assume is the final boss kinda deal?0 -
Well, I haven't played all the way through, so I'm not certain. However, the very first creature you encounter in the game is a dragon. He actually turns you into "The Arisen" (I won't spoil it and say how), and it's not at all clear just what his motivations may be in doing so. I also know there are other various large reptiles you encounter, including other dragons, drakes, hydras, etc. I'm not at all of the opinion any of these other scaly brutes has your best interests in mind. In fact, I'm pretty sure they see you as a tasty snack. LOL
Definitely worth it.0 -
I really want to get this game, but have read that it is kind of short. (30-35 hours). Anyone know if they are planning any dlc to extend the play time? I've played the demo and it looks good. Thanks!0

LMAO @ kinda short 30-35 hours. I remember when I was a kid, and games started becoming that long, I thought it was worth the $50. Now that I have a wife, kids, work, among other things, I don't play the 60+ hour games as much. I have yet to open up Skyrim. That will be dedicated for my one week vacation.0 -

Skyrim, for example, I put 210+ hours into it before getting the Platinum trophy and then I called it quits. There was still more content, but I just had to move on.0 -
Well when you pay the same for Skyrim and Dragon's Dogma and get about 150ish less, 30-35 hrs seems like a very little bang for the buck.0

Welcome to captialism. When I was a kid, we paid $50 for a game that lasted an hour. Maybe less. You can always cast your vote by saying no, I won't pay that. But then you'll miss out.
Last game I put 240 hours into was Dragon Age. And that was cuz my wife had a kid and my job gave me 2 months of paid paternity leave.0 -

There are very, very few games that will give you as much game as the Elder Scrolls and Fallout series. You can't allow one game every year or two to dictate standards for game length to price ratios..
But then again, I'm happy and willing to pay $15 for a game like Journey, where you finish it in 1.5 hours. Sometimes, quality is worth the money.0 -
I hear you and understand what you are saying. I even agree with you to an extent.:) I bought Fallout 3, all of the Elder Scrolls series, and Mass Effect 2 and 3. Obviously because they are great games (in my opinion), but also because they offered countless hours of entertainment. As a gamer that's one thing that I've always been drawn to.
Please don't get me wrong, as I'm not saying Dragon's Dogma is a bad game because it is 30ish hours. In reality it looks pretty cool, and my son loves how you can jump ON mobs (demo). But, for what I'm personally looking for in a game - it just may not be right for ME to purchase.
I think one of my all time favorite games was Dragon Quest VIII which offered me over 100 hours of game play. Lots of stuff to do and several sessions to complete.0 -

This isn't entirely accurate. Depending how you play, you will likely get a MINIMUM of 30-40 hours of gameplay in. That's roughly what you could expect if you only did the core quests and put a high premium on finishing quickly. There are a crap-tonne of side quests that at the very least will double that figure. If you like to explore, locate Easter Eggs, max out your gear, play with different classes and skill loadouts, etc., 120-150 hours or more is quite possible, and even likely. You could even try to hit level cap, which the devs hinted might be around lvl 200!
Additionally, Capcom is releasing weekly DLC quests for AT LEAST 10 weeks. Each weekly packet has 10 new quests. While these aren't necessary to finish the game, they are actually pretty fun and challenging. Each completed quest in these weekly series nets a special "coin" quest item. There's speculation about what may happen if one manages to collect all 100 coins!
It's also not outside the realm of possibility that they may be working on a major DLC content expansion (a few cryptic comments by the devs prior to launch seemed to hint that they were working on a significant project that may see light of day later this year.)
TL:DR Just pick up the game! You won't regret it!0 -
Thx StarGeezer! Thats exactly what I wanted to hear!! Love to craft, do side quests and explore.0

I got this before the day of release and I'm loving it. I've put in almost 40 hours so far and I am only just fighting the Griffin. I am doing side quests and currently trying to get 2 Augments from Sorcerer to use when I go back to being a Mystic Knight.
I want to get Conservation and Articulacy. I would also like to get Perpetuation from the Mage class, but I am just loving Sorcerer at the moment. I hate mage classes in games, but this is really fun.0
