Hiking can be a great form of exercise. Part of the appeal is getting away from civilization and the comforts, security and predictability of home. Changing up your routine with activities outside of the gym should keep you stimulated and active. We're told to keep moving if we want to shed unwanted pounds. A stroll in the park may be all you can muster for now. Maybe you see yourself trekking in the foothills or along mountain trails. Whichever it is, when you get out to unfamiliar settings where unpredictable weather, unfamiliar terrain, and the unexpected are the rule, planning and preparation are keys to an enjoyable and safe hike. There are websites for hikers providing a wealth of information to get you started. One suggested site is http://www.appalachiantrail.org. There are websites like http://www.whiteblaze.net devoted to the hiking enthusiast, where you will find help on how to physically prepare yourself for hiking.

If you're like me, you'd rather have fun in the process. I do get some enjoyment out of reaching goals in the gym, but it ain't a walk in the park.

Hope to see you on the trial!
