Detroit?

So I am heading to the Detroit area next week for 2 trips totaling 5 or 6 weeks or so, and I am curious if anyone lives there/from there/been there that has suggestions on stuff to do and things to see in the area.
Right now, I've heard the Ford Museum is good, and that Ann Arbor is a nice town to spend a day in. And I want to go see a Tigers game. But after that I am pretty clueless. I will be bringing my passport just in case there is something interesting on the Canadian side of the border.

Go do the Astoria Bakery shop for a treat. We always go there when we go to a Tigers game.

It's been a lot of years since I lived in Royal Oak working for GM, but I did go to the Ford Museum. I remember that I felt rushed because there was a lot to see and we didn't leave enough time. I also went to the Motown museum downtown; a little cheesy but interesting...
All I can say is that the best advice I got (too late) was to avoid staying south of 8 mile...granted this was 15 years ago so things change, but I know I certainly felt secure as a single female at 22 staying in a hotel surrounded by barbed wire that offered hourly rates. They said they were in a safe location, yeah right?!0 -

I am staying in Clinton Township for at least the first two weeks. Not sure how that is. But if it's awful I'll switch hotels for the second trip!0 -
Clinton Township is not bad, it's more of a suburb area. There are metroparks around there, Metro Beach and Stony Creek isn't too far either. Once in a while I go to them and run, ride my bike, or rollerblade on the trails, or just chill on a beach. You can also rent kayaks or paddleboats and some other stuff.
The whole "south of 8 Mile" thing is a little misleading, because the entire city of Detroit is south of 8 Mile. But yeah the whole city definitely has a lot of bad neighborhoods.
As far as things to do, definitely catch a Tiger's game. Greektown is not far from there, there are a bunch of good Greek restaurants, a couple bars, and a casino. There are a couple other casinos in the area too, they're pretty good for hanging out, people watching, and they have some of the best restaurants and clubs. Other than that, it depends what you're into. The DIA (Detroit Institute of Arts) is a great museum. The Ford Museum is definitely a good idea, and Greenfield Village, especially if you like history type stuff. It's still cool even if you don't though. There's also Belle Isle. Eastern Market is pretty cool on Saturday mornings. The Detroit Zoo is not bad either. My favorite restaurants in the area are probably Slow's and Lafayette Coney Island.
Ann Arbor is nice, it's a little bit of a drive from Clinton Township though. I honestly don't go out there much so I don't know what there is to do, but it's decent town just to walk around in. Where I live in Royal Oak is okay too, decent night life and good restaurants, but a lot smaller than Ann Arbor. It's closer to where you're staying though.
Like I said, it all depends what you're in to. There's a lot to do and it's pretty spread out. If you have any more questions feel free to ask!0 -

The distance doesn't bother me much especially as I have entire weekends to fill and most of the places I get sent to for work are a couple of hours from anything so I am used to driving on the weekends.
I am definately more in to historical sites and natural sites so I'll definitely be looking into a few of your suggestions.0 -
Definitely hit up Greenfield Village and Henry Ford Museum then, you can even see Thomas Edison's workshop.0
