"Vintage" bikes?

Yesterday I picked up my 1977 Fuji S-10-S from the local bike shop. I had it tuned, new wrap on the handlebars, and new hoods for the brakes. I rode it home which was 23 miles. There was definitely a learning curve to riding it as I have not been on it in years. Toward the second half of the ride I found my self very comfortable with the gears and the handling as well. Certainly, the seat was not the most comfortable, but not terrible. This bike was my father's, purchased new. I have had it in my possesion for at least 10 years, but it just sat in storage. As I rode I was thinking about how he would let me ride it as a young teenager - at that time I never would have imagined that I would be riding that bike 30 years later!! That is why we have a hard time getting rid of our old bikes!!!! It was a blast and I intend to push it to the limits tonight.

I love riding bikes - old, new, borrowed and currently - yep - blue.

I've a couple of older bikes, which are gradually getting built up in "period correct" hardware - as I've mentioned in the "Schwaggggg" thread. I've also a couple of even older bikes, one of which I seriously doubt I'll ever have the correct kit to build up, and frankly, the inclination to build and ride it just isn't there, as its a highly specialised bit of kit - an old fashioned "funny bike" time-trial frame - the ones with the small front wheel and larger rear disk, bullhorn bars for the real "here's my head, my harris is following" look. It's ugly looking, and very, very uncomfortable to ride for more than a couple of hours - even if I DID have a pair of wheels to build it with!. And the final strike against it, is it's been banned for competition by the UCI, so I couldn't race it if I wanted to. No, sadly, it's destined to be a wall-hanger I reckon.

    Yin,

They are fun, bikes. On Saturday I took the Fuji for a 57 mile jaunt, relatively flat, maybe 30 minutes of headwinds but otherwise fairly calm. She performed well. Sunday I took it on a hilly route for 31 miles, again it performed well from a mechanical standpoint, but, a climber it is not!!!!

I'm still shopping for that modern road bike. I appreciate the thoughts on my "frame type" post. It (my choice) may come down to a combination of economics and confidence in materials. Right now I am pretty interested in Cannondale, perhaps the CAAD 10, but have yet to ride one. 'Til then I'm riding the snot out of my MTN bike and the Fuji.

    Happy trails.
