Perhaps you created the topic about us being a boring group when no one replied to this one. Sorry, but this just isn't my thing.

it was a joke. I actually have a pagan friend. well, unbaptised...he doesn't dance naked in the woods on the solstice...

I'm a French Canadian, and we celebrate St Jean Baptiste day, and huge bonfires are pretty traditional. Dancing is common too. On the eve of June 24th, the different neighborhoods in Montreal bring in musical groups, and the performances are followed by fireworks. During the day, there are all kinds of games in the parks for kids, communal dinners, and another music concert followed by more fireworks. We celebrate St John the Baptiste around the solstice because he said that he would diminish while Christ would increase, which is what the light does on December 24th.

So yes, you can be Catholic and celebrate the solstice, seeing in the diminishing light the reflection of St Jean Baptiste until the next solstice. We have an even better time than the pagans. As Hilaire Beloq said:

Wherever the Catholic sun doth shine, there is laughter and good red wine,
at least I've always thought it so
    Benedicamous Domino.
