"Possibility of PCOS"

Hi everyone, I've been dealing with many odd little health issues for the past year. I mentioned ages ago to my doctor the possibility of PCOS and she knocked down the idea…a year later I requested an ultra sound. The results showed a possibility of PCOS and now I have to see a reproductive specialist. I keep researching online and am finding more and more of the symptoms I am having could be related to PCOS. I don't want to self diagnose but this is very stressful and at this point I'm almost entirely sure that I have it. Any support would be greatly appreciated. I'm struggling a lot with the stress and anxiety of not knowing what is wrong and no one in my life seems to really understand. I figured people who have been diagnosed may be able to help me. Thank you.

  • Hi Nikki, thanks for responding. I've been really stressed with this health issue and am glad there are others and a lot of different information about it. I've had 2 periods in 1 year. I luckily somehow only gained 10 pounds but the fear of not having kids one day when/if I would like to, is a very scary thought. I never realized some people with PCOS have intense sugar cravings, and mood swings, and all of these other symptoms that I've got. I'm hoping to get some help next month after my appointment. Best of luck with yours!

    Hi Becky,

I have PCOS. Six years ago, I was 28 and my husband and I started trying to conceive. I had been on the pill for the past 8 years but before that, my periods had always been irregular. They started out irregular again so I went to the doctor. After the pelvic ultrasound and bloodwork, I was told I had a borderline case of PCOS, but not enough to diagnose me with it. I lost 10 lbs. and was able to conceive.
I went back on the pill but about six months ago, my husband and I decided we wanted another baby. Well, I have had two periods in that time - and they were 26 days apart, so I haven't had one now since January! It is definitely worse this time. I have lost 16 lbs. so far but it doesn't seem that my cycle has resumed. Also, I am taking 1000 mg of Metformin a day. But I had lost about 8 lbs. on my own before I started it.
The symptoms I have are irregular periods, acne, thinning hair, a little bit of facial hair (like four hairs), the cysts, obesity, unusual levels of hormones (including insulin). Nikki - I know what you are saying about gaining weight and not knowing it. When I went to the doctor the first time, she was like Oh have you gained weight recently? I said no and she looked at the chart and said Actually you've gained 40 lbs. I had no idea!

    Hi Becky!

I know exactly what you are going through. When I was diagnosed in 2002 the information on PCOS was limited and my doctor didn't really give me any hope. But I have found a new doctor and friends who are their to support me. I know you fear not having a child but you will get through this. Keeping the weigh off and keeping active help subdue PCOS. And support will get you though anything.
