This video made me cry. As much as I love my country, I wholeheartedly agree that we've rested for far too long on the accomplishments of our forefathers. As a society, we've become complacent with the status quo. I believe that most Americans either care very much about seeing our country improve but feel they can't do enough on their own, or they don't care at all. It's time for us to start acting like Americans again, because we've lost our spirit.

It is sad because I WANT to say America is the greatest country. I am one that feels there are too many idiots in the world that it would take a massive event for people to stand up and change things.

Totally agree with you on that one. Many people are content to just go about their day to day and not at least try ONE thing to make our country better. I guess this is why I teach, lol. Sadly, though, this generation of students is by far the least interested in giving back. All they want is to take, take, take and play on their ipods.

Wow. Provoking and sobering. So glad credit was given to the other democratic countries in this world! To be the greatest, however, implies that others are not so great. Why do we always have to be "on top" or regret when we are not? It's not the Industrial Revolution anymore and the space race has been won. The constant competition instead of cooperation is craziness, and to roll around in that stye is just a rut. Honestly, I don't want America to be "the greatest" but to lead from within with integrity. When that happens, the rest will take care of itself.

I think anyone from outside the USA will ask why anyone form within the USA has ever believed that the USA is the greatest nation.

In my opinion everything 'great' in the world has evolved from Europe and continues to do so. That is including all economic, scientific, social and cultural arenas.

Would love to debate this. The USA is now, and/or has ever been the greatest at what?

The question "is America the greatest?" is not helpful. It's not wrong in that it is only one part of the giant puzzle of how all the people of the world fit together. Fixating on it detracts from greater questions such as How Can American Work Better within the World? How can America help its numerous and weaker citizens? This life we all live on this planet is not a competition, it is one shot to do what? Finish first, greatest, fastest, richest?

This seems to be an honest question based on the original youtube video we were to watch (original topic post): The USA is now, and/or has ever been the greatest at what? I think the founding fathers of this country - Adams, Franklin, and Jefferson in particular - created a great experiment that even Franklin acknowledged was tenuous. Jefferson saw the risks from the "monied groups" and if he were alive today I think he'd be surprised that the Constitution exists at all because he believed that for a people to keep their sovereignty they had to have a revolution every hundred years. Instead, we chose to give our sovereignty away to "the monied" groups who keep us comfortable with bread and circuses. The Great Experiment that these men (and the women who supported them) created was better than anything Europe had at the time. But, it didn't last long. When America started breaking treaties with the Native Americans and pursuing expansion on the backs of racism, she sealed her fate. So at one brief shining moment, she was great - but that's about all.

Even the question, however, is antagonistic and not helpful. It reeks of nationalism and achievement at the expense of worthy others. To my American brothers and sisters I say, we need to "get over it".

    Yes, he's right.

I also agree with LastSixtySix--why do Americans (in general) feel that the United States NEEDS to be #1? Why do Americans feel that they're better than others? Patriotism is one thing. Cockiness, arrogance, brainwashing-induced "pride" is another. It honestly sickens me that people will say things like "I'm proud to be an American, because I'm from the greatest country in the world," simply because they hear it on TV, or they'd brainwashed into that sort of thinking.

But hey, as long as we keep wearing our red, white, and blue t-shirts we bought at Old Navy...you know...the ones made in China...it's all good! We'll continue to be #1! *vomit*

everything evolves from something else. if we want to be technical we can say everything evolves from Africa since thats where modern man evolved.

and just to name another few things the USA is best at... going to the moon, building a navy, producing entertainment for the world...etc...

i know one area where we are not the best and thats food...we have some good homegrown stuff but it doesnt compare to places like Thailand, China, Spain.

No no - not yet!!! It didn't go "all the way". :ohwell: Remember, America did enact the Civil Rights Act. That was more cool than the build up of a navy or winning the race to the moon.

Define "best". Best at what? Colonialism? Imperialism? Utilitarianism?

the civil rights act is great but its sad that we had to have one and that it happened so recently.

I agree with this. It's sad that we're in the 21st century and still just granting people the same rights as everybody else.

As for whether or not we're the greatest nation, I agree with Lastsitxtysix, why do we feel like we NEED to be the greatest nation? Yes, we are better than some nations at some things, but there are other nations that are better at other things than us. Nobody can be the best at everything. However, if we were knocked off of our little pedestal, I think that would help us fix the problems that we have as a nation instead of turning our noses up and just saying that we're the best when we really aren't.

I have been harassed, I have had my privacy violated, and I have been threatened and bullied (albeit the only serious threat came from what I am certain was not an official source but merely an overly enthusiastic 'patriot') for espousing my political views. I will never forgive this country for that, and I have no intention of remaining here. I don't feel particularly free and I don't feel all that safe here, nor do I wish to contribute anything to a society that permits non-violent activists to be harassed.

On the other hand, I haven't been jailed or beaten or killed for my political views. I'm well aware that in some countries I'd already be pushing up daisies for saying the things I've said. Of course, the governments of some of those countries are supported by my country's tax dollars. Which is also horrible.

In any case, not being the worst is no excuse for not trying harder to be the best, or, better, yet, as Debra pointed out, better, not competing, just becoming better. But I'm done trying to make it better. I'm done with America and will be leaving as soon as I can. I wish you all well, I hope this country changes direction for the better, but I give up trying to change it. The super patriots win. Love it or leave it? I'll leave, thanks.

Oh, and on a side note, I am ashamed of my fellow citizens for being so rabidly against legalizing gay marriage.

I think she meant that it's not more special than something that other people have. Yes, in your example, Jazz is special, but is it more special than any other music that is out there? It's a matter of opinion.

no. she thinks our culture is so bad that its horrible its being spread around the world. and that it is not worthy of being spread.

if she felt it was just as good as others she'd probably be ok with it spreading.

something as wonderful as jazz, flamenco etc...are definitely worthy of being spread. in fact its almost a crime if they are not shared with everyone.
