Grip Strength

I'm getting a lot better with pullups using resistance bands (eventually I'll get to an unassisted pullup!!) but one of the things have some serious issues with is my grip on the pullup bar. To put it simply, my hands HURT! We were talking about this yesterday and it was said that no matter how much I build up my hands from being "princess hands" it'll always hurt. I can deal with that, I just want to be able to keep a grip on the bar.
Knees to elbows and toes to bar don't exist for me because I can't keep a grip on the bar! Anyone have any tips on how that I can build up my grip strength?

I've been told to do all my pull ups and toes to bar with an overhand grip but to keep your thumb on the same side of the bar as the rest of your fingers, not a hook grip, to gain grip strength and also reduce tears.
