i have not messed with my macro settings on MFP--assuming they are 30/30/40 (fat/pro/carb).
Since joining MFP, i have begun to measure everything, and have scaled WAAAY back on my use of added oils (i was being very liberal with olive oil, coconut oil, chia seeds, etc).

even with way less oil than i'd been eating, i am still "over" on fats...but always under my calories....

do other vegans have these issues? is it okay to be over on fats if i am losing (which i am ) :)

please glance at my diary; i've only been on here 4 days or so, so you can see all my days in just a few minutes

thanks

unless you have a very specific training goal or health problems that would restrict your fat, I wouldn't worry about it as long as you are under your calories. Because fats are very high calorie they can easily put you over your total goal but if you're still within that, I wouldn't stress over it.

I'm pretty sure the default macro settings are NOT 40:30:30..if you get the phone or iPad app you can see your pie chart and it will tell you your goal percentages and what your diary looks like that day. I find this a very helpful tool to plan my eats for the day. It also helped me to keep shaving off my once liberal use of "healthy" oils. Now, I steam sauté with water and dress salads and veggies with just an acid, nutritional yeast, and herbs/spices/salt. I get my fats from nut and seeds/their butters (ok and vegan pizza :o)

Cutting out oil may seem drastic, but honestly I don't miss them at all! They might not be that bad...but they're not necessary either.

Looks like you use olive oil in your cooking. You can replace that with water, or veggie broth. I eliminated oils when i went vegan in April, I don't even have a bottle of oil in my pantry. I do use a little spray when baking, but I always cook with water, or veggie broth. And I bake my own treats using applesauce instead of oil. Check out happyherbivore.com and fatfreevegan.com for more info on replacing oil in cooking. I'd replace oil in your cooking and still enjoy the nuts and seeds.

I am a firm believer that there are no healthy extracted oils, this means oils that have been removed from the food they come from. I try to limit my intake as much as possible, here is an awesome informative website with a post about it- http://www.vega-licious.com/health-nutrition/is-controversy-healthy-why-there-are-no-healthy-oils-olive-oil-coconut-oil-or-otherwise/

thanks everyone--lots of great links and info.

i am not sure about completely eliminating oils: i am sure it can be done, and that is probably perfectly healthy as long as one still eats seeds and nuts.

but for me at this point, totally eliminating oil, and cooking veggies with only broth instead, would probably create feelings of deprivation. rational or not, if i feel deprived, that can lead to overeating later.
having a little oil makes me happy and satiated. however, if my loss stops or slows drastically before i reach my goal (lose 33 more lbs), then i might consider eliminating oil...

maybe a good compromise for now is to reduce oils even more so: perhaps only 1 T a day of added oils, rather than the 2 T or so that i currently allow myself.

prior to joining MFP this week, i'd been using probably about 5 T a day, if not more!

I don't eat added oil, as I don't see a nutritional benefit: they're just extra calories I really don't want/need. I'm not "fat free", I try to eat only oil when it's still in the veg it comes from, if I can help it.

If you're within your range each day and are seeing weight loss, then if you like the extra oil, leave it.
