Bi-monthly cycles and birth control?? [Long]

Before I get started, I just want to say hello and want to apologize if anything I say is a little.. well.. TMI..ish.
I've been diagnosed with PCOS for about a year now, and so far have been living with it rather well. At first there was the non-stop bleeding and uncontrollable weight gain, but since getting on a progesterone pill, things have been going smoothly. I take it the very first ten days of each and every month, and it helps to keep my cycles regulated...
At first things were going swell, and I was finally able to drop some weight, but now it seems that the more I do, the weirder things become for me. To clarify, I am used to having a normal 10 day cycle during each month (mines has always been lengthy *Go figure*), but now, I'm starting to have a second period following the first one!
Maybe two or three days after the first one ends, I go through what feels like all the PMS symptoms and again... TOM comes to town. Sometimes it's longer than the first (once it was twelve days), and sometimes it's as short as 2.
Does anybody else go through this? It's rather annoying, really. I've talked to my doctor about it, and they have offered to put me on birth control, but I've had some whacky things happen while on BC pills in the past. My foot actually started to swell in one instance and wouldn't go down! At other times, I packed on weight, which for someone at this point in time who is trying to lose is just.. well.. counterproductive.
Has anyone else found themselves having bi-monthly cycles and not resorted to the pill? I'm at my wits end, and the doctor has very little else to offer besides a shot, patch, or pill---which I've graciously declined for the moment, in fear of even more side-effects.
