So, what are grits and gravy for breakfast?

Grits sounds so horrible!!! Does it taste gritty??

What is it? And how is it made? And how many cals?

Also, gravy in England is like a beef/meat juice thing!

What is your gravy made of that it goes with eggs n bacon?

Also, someone told me that donuts here are not as nice as yours. That's cool cos I dont like donuts. They just seem like deep fried balls of fat with sugar on top. Very sickly!! Are they the same in America? And if so, why do you like them so much?? :noway:

Lets talk fooooooooooood for a change.....yummy, yummy!! :flowerforyou:

Grits are corn (ground corn)... so think oatmeal but made out of corn instead. They are like a porridge... I like more more savory so, pepper, bacon that sort of thing. Some people just eat grits with butter. I actually LOVE grits. -- Grits are very low cal as a stand-alone. It's just what you put in them that makes them higher.

Gravy - we have the beef gravy here too, but a biscuits and gravy meal is more of a creamy gravy. So instead of a beef base to make it, it would be made with cream and a lot of times has sausage chunks in it. Calories wise this stuff is deadly. Topped on a fluffy buttermilk biscuit or two and you're pretty much screwed for the day.

Donuts... basically fried round dough -- most with a hole in the center topped with glazing. Some are just solid and have cream fillings....

Canadian here..we are pretty Americanized with our food though other than a few things.

Poutine would have to be a Canadian dish that is Loaded with BAD. Fries with cheese curds and gravy..I used to eat horribly but could still never bring myself to this level..it looks like what your arteries must look like after you eat it..ewwwww.

But really English food isn't known for being all that healthy either. But I do love bangers and mash :)

So, porridge? It's like a cereal in the morning? Dont know why you would add butter to porridge but I dont like porridge either

What are the biscuits like you put the gravy on? Is it like a sweet biscuit?? Or a cracker or .....??

God I love grits. Fried eggs, over easy, with grits and bacon. Oh Jesus. But only southerners eat them, and not even many of us now. Too many northerners have moved down. I saw more bagels than grits when I was back in North Carolina.

But of course biscuits and gravy, now that's my favorite food of all time. Sausage gravy, yum, yum. One serving must be 3000 calories, but I'd live on the treadmill to eat biscuits and gravy. It's been so long, so very long.

My stomach is literally growling right now.

Donuts? Nah, doesn't do much for me.

Biscuits and gravy go WITH eggs and bacon... I don't put mine on top, but I suppose you could.

The biscuits are fluffy dense roll-type things... can you not see the photos, woman? LOL

Well, I know porridge isn't exactly what I was looking for but was trying to find a similar comparison. Grits are just a bunch of ground corn, cooked and then topped with butter or bacon or pepper and cheese... whatever. A savory breakfast option.

yep, fries with cheese curd sounds pretty fatty!!

sausage and mash is a staple here - I get low fat sausages and make the mash out of butternut squash - yummy and low cal substitute

Our fish and chips are also delish - loaded with fat, but so good for a treat. I dont even think I can describe British chips - nothing like fries! And you can't make them the same at home. Chip shop chips are unique.

My other fave is Pie & mash - more of a London fast food - a minced pie with potato mash and a parsley gravy - about 1000 cals too....lol

I'd eat it over sushi, lobster, steak, anything.

But it's hard to get good biscuits and gravy. Unless you're eating at someone's home. And they need to be living in the south in the US.

The biscuits are important, but the sausage gravy is the key. As in life, it's all about the gravy.

    I'm an American in Prague.

And grits are served warm, of course. For texture think polenta. Runny versus more solid is a personal choice. I'm not a fan of runny.

Grits are really more of a southern thing, not a lot of places serve grits up here. I'm more of a hash brown person myself. Or waffles. Mmmmm....waffles.

Me neither! The creamy, lumpy gravy on bics looks icky too!

Mind you the English have given the world some culinary abominations too

Shepherds Pie vs Cottage pie - such a dilemma....?

haha! Beef or lamb is a mood thing. But usually I'd go for Shepperds - lamb

Actually, I havent made one in forever. I wonder if a butternut squash mash would make a good substitute....hmmm!

Oh the one thing my dad misses after visiting England is the different kinds of kit-kats. I think he has an addiction to them now.
