Struggling with eating well..

So, a bit of back story before I go into my question.

I lost 42 lbs before I got pregnant and did so by eating balanced meals and light exercise 3x a week or so. I worked hard on eating better quality food and eating at least 2-3 servings of veggies per day (didn't always succeed, but I tried to stick with this).

I've 10 weeks pregnant, and for the last week, I seem to find vegetables, meat, and pretty much anything but fruit and white carbs totally unappetizing. I've really been struggling to get in enough veggies and protein every day, and I'm not sure what to do.

Do you have any advice for me?

I'm having exactly the same, fruit and carbs are all I want, I think because they help to settle that sick feeling, at least for a wee while. I think you should force down a bit of protein, even though the thought of it makes me feel seriously ill I have found that I can make myself eat it, the actual eating is not as bad as the thought, and I feel much better afterwards. Just have to do your best and remember that once the nausea eases up, it will be easier to make good choices.

    Thanks!

Weirdly enough, I've had almost no nausea except when brushing my teeth in the morning. I just seem to have a really strong aversion to a lot of food now, and it's very weird.

I forced down a chicken patty with dinner tonight, though all I wanted was the mashed potatoes and fruit.

    Hooray for being pregnant!!

My advice? Eat what you're able and don't stress over it. It'll get better as you are approach your second trimester.

If its really wearing on you, try looking into a "green powder" to supplement your lack of veggies and be sure to take your prenatal.

But most importantly - please don't stress. You won't cause harm to your baby and won't ruin your previous weight loss by chowing down on white carbs for a few weeks.

(PS - I totally laughed your dinner comment. A few weeks ago I pulled a bowl of mashed potatoes, an apple and a mint skinny cow ice cream sandwich from my lunch bag at work. A coworker laughed and was like, "What in heck are you eating?!" It seemed pretty obivous to me, but I answered, "Lunch?!" )

LOL @ Lou_Ann! Yeah, that was me at the grocery store tonight walking around for something to eat. Ended up with a box of mashed potatoes and a cup of fruit. Oi...

Thanks! I'll try not to worry so much. I have been taking my prenatal vitamins on time, and I've kept up with my calcium and iron intake. Hopefully, that will be good enough.

Early on in my pregnancy I did protein shakes - that way I knew I was getting some protein (and it blended with fruit!) because the idea of meat was yucky.

I also did peanut butter sandwiches for some protein.

I had a huge aversion to veggies - I managed to eat caesar salad and celery with peanut butter though.

mmm peanut butter. Still my BFF.

Don't worry too much, I find that as my pregnancy goes on I want healthier foods. I just had to get over a trimester of Big Mac attacks.

I was the same way during my first trimester. Around 12-15 weeks I started eating more veggies and meat proteins. The aversions should pass with time. I never figured out a way to work around them (this is my 3rd preg). I think with this preg the only veggie I got was wilted spinach on a pizza. I did crave spinach and cheese pizza all. the. time. So- maybe a homemade veggie pizza with light cheese might work once a week. Also try a veggie casserole. There are tons of recipes out there. As for protein, my doc was ok with me eating protein bars and smoothies.

Yeah i am in the same boat. I am just about 8 weeks, and nothing really sounds good except for pasta and fruit. The bad thing is that every 2 hours my tummt hurts so bad like i have not eaten in days! and i am very nauseated pretty much all day, and sometimes its really bad in the evening.

Very similar way for me in the beginning. I didn't have any nauseousness but nothing looked or tasted appealing as much as pasta and carbs. But it changed around 12 weeks. I have a hard time with eating enough veggies but I LOVE fruit right now. just try to remember your old habits before you were pregnant and try to enforce them a little more. Will power baby! don't let it slip away. :)

Yum! Homemade pizza. That's a great idea. I've had an aversion to poultry for the past week after this disgusting chicken salad sandwich I made from a can of chicken packed in chicken broth...ugh. I'm making stuffed zucchini for dinner tonight...its kind of bland, which is my favorite flavor right now!

I'm way passed the early stages and I'm just now starting to be able to incorporate more protein. I had a severe aversion to chicken- my go to food. I also didn't want to eat eggs at all. Luckily, in my 25th week, I can eat eggs with no problem at all and can eat chicken as long as I don't have to prepare it, look at it, cut it, etc haha!

Eat what you can when you can- carbs were my best friend for a long time. It was quite a shock to go back to eating all those foods but it filled me up and made me happy.

Best of luck to finding foods that work for you!

My first trimester I didn't have morning sickness, but did feel a bit gross at times. I suddenly hated coffee, tea and some of my favourite veggies, but it eventually went away. I ate a lot of fruit, crackers, toast with PB, and took PBJ sandwiches at work. I agree with everybody else, if you have a few weeks of only eating what is appealing, it won't hurt you.

Just do the best you can and maybe try creative ways to work protein and veggies in with your food. Also protein shakes are a good suggestion....and delicious!

I was drinking protein shakes until I read about the amount of heavy metals in them... Particularly the one I was drinking (which I agree, delicious!!), is one of the worst as far as levels of things like lead and cadmium! Yuck.

When I first got pregnant, I lost a bunch of weight, Dr. said eat whatever sounded good, but I took that a bit far. :) Now I'm *trying* to eat better and exercise more.
