For the Ladies - Hormones Changes!

Okay, I wanted to post this here so that anyone who is interested can maybe learn something from my experience. When I first had my surgery, I came home after my 2 nights in the hospital and got my period. And it was really crampy and heavy, not at all like my regular, light, 2 day, no cramp periods before weight loss. But I didn't think too much about it.

A day or two after I got home I got a call from a nurse with my insurance company. She asked a lot of general questions about how I was feeling, etc. and then she told me that hormones are stored in your fat cells and that some people experience the 'blues' as they rapidly lose weight and these hormones are released. I didn't think much about this either.

Fast forward to the next monthly cycle. 4 days before my period begins, I am having trouble sleeping, having dizzy spells and general irritability. Then, due to dehydration, I wound up in the hospital for 8 hours last Wednesday. In addition to the dehydration and dry heaves, were panic attacks that I have not experienced since I had post partum after my kids were born. Of course the sleep deprivation only added to the panic. While in the ER my period finally began and again, there were heavy cramps and heavy flow. The waves of panic followed by bouts of crying continued two more days. Then on Sunday, with Aunt Flo returning home, my 'blue mood' left with her.

I went to my surgeon for the 6 week check up today and spoke to the PA about it. Being a woman, she was much more sympathetic than the male (although wonderful) surgeon. She confirmed that hormones are stored in the fat cells and that some patients actually start their periods while still in the hospital, right after surgery. She also gave me some hope that things should straighten back out after 4 - 5 cycles (Thank You, Jesus!)

You know when you haven't really heard about something, you begin to think that it is just YOU! Now I know a little more of what to expect next month and am ready with some much valued medication to help with the hormonal changes.
