Hey everyone,
I'd just like some advice- In January, I started training for my first marathon. I completed it in May and had an amazing experience. I was energized to start training for a second one this fall. I got back on my training schedule and I just haven't been into it. I feel like it's just taking away so much of my time. I've decided to only train for one marathon a year (for now). I just think part of it is just being bored with running. I think I'd like to add more sprinting to my cardio instead of long distance running. I also think I'm over training. I haven't been able to hit the speeds I used to get to before my marathon.

I've settled on competing in a half marathon this fall instead. I really enjoy shorter 5ks with challenging routes. These tend to keep me motivated.

I guess I'm posting this here because I'd like to know if anyone else has felt this way, and how they've worked on their routines to "spice it up."

Thanks!

I understand. I absolutely love to run, not just for exercise but just for the sport in itself. After feeling like I've just been on one marathon training cycle after another, and putting in so much time logging miles, I did feel the burnout. If there is another sport or form of exercise you love to do, switch it up. I started biking more, swimming more, and found I loved these almost as much... plus I get the added bonus of working other muscles and tackling on a new challenge.

I used to just train for marathons only, but I found that I love racing the shorter distances and focusing on improving in those areas as well.

I lift as much, if not more than I run. I do not get bored because there is always a new challenge in what I am doing. I try to get one more rep, add 5 more pounds...shave 5 seconds off my time, go one extra mile...

Marathon training can be mentally taxing so there is no stigma in looking at doing some shorter goal races and focusing on speed.

I am not doing a fall one but instead of an October HM as my goal.

Have you tried trail running? Impossible to get bored out on gorgeous, changing trails... and the races are FUN!
