Eating out

I have a favorite restaurant when we go to Evanston that has a special gluten free menu and I've eaten off that menu in the past with no ill effects. However, yesterday I got a grilled shrimp salad with ginger dressing and had a histamine attack. I haven't had one this bad for a couple of months. I think I know what got me--the hard noodles (fried won ton strips?) that came on the salad which I ate. I suppose it my own stupid fault that I ate them because in the back of my mind I knew they weren't hard rice noodles. As a result I was up half the night coughing rather than sleeping.

Later yesterday, I scanned an article in the Living Without Magazine, or maybe it was Gluten Free Living, about restaurants saying they have a special gluten free menu, but aren't living up because of contamination or other issues. I guess that's true, the cook didn't know enough not to put those noodles on top of the gf salad and I was too dumb to realize the mistake. I can tell you it won't happen again. I am also going to eat out less, which is a good thing for some many reasons.

Be careful when dining out, folks. It could be dangerous to your health.

Sorry you had an attack last night. I find it very hard to eat out. I would like to have a place on occassion. I don't love cooking but seem to be forced to. I hope you are feeling better soon.

Thanks, Eve23, I am feeling better and realize we have to stop eating out so much. Last night when I was making dinner, I realized I do like cooking--I was singing and dancing around the kitchen--it was great! I think what happens is that I get tired of figuring out what to make every day. Now that we're both home--I guess you'd say retired (but it's really because there's no work)--I feel like I have to cook 2 meals a day and that get tiring even faster. My husband is a dear and loves to help and that means a great deal to me (and he loves my cooking). We also like to take mini-vacations, that's really hard.

It's only been since April, so I'm hoping it will get easier with time. I have to remember that my home cooking will keep me healthy and help me continue to lose weight (very slowly).

I can certainly relate to that. We rarely eat out because of my allergies. Not that I don't like to get out. We have two boys at home 17 and 10 yet. My husband doesn't get home till 6:30 or later most nights. During the summer I am off but during the winter I do work part time and am out of the house by 6:30 am. So winter tends to be easy or crock pot meals. And really summer tends to be a little of the same. We end up repeating the same kinds of meals alot just because I am at a lot at time.

One of the blogs I read suggests saying "nothing crunchy on the salad" to avoid any croutons, noodles, etc.

I'm just beginning to learn that. Believe me, it is a hard lesson to learn.
