How Long Correction Takes After Giving Dose?

I have been trying to figure out how long insulin remains working for an insulin bolus and correction dose. I have noticed that after meals especially breakfast that my sugar may still be dropping before I'm bout to have lunch. This results in a low after lunch and makes it difficult to figure out my correct insulin to carb ratio. Has anyone had similar difficulties in trying to determine they're correct I/C ratio and correction dose and has anyone found the right amount of time it takes for insulin to be completely done working after giving the dose?

Unfortunately, I think this differs from person to person and for me, it even differs depending on the time of the month and if I'm working out regularly or not. Generally though, I think my insulin stays active for 1 - 1.5hours after I take a bolus. I just got the Dexcom continuous glucose monitor and it has been and AMAZING tool in regulating my sugar. It's such a nice thing to be able to see where my sugar is, if it's going up, down, staying level and if it's changing how fast. I'd highly recommend it, if your insurance would cover it. Even if you don't use it all the time, it could be a good tool in figuring out how the insulin is affecting you and for how long. Best of luck!0

Thanks! I also think it differs from person to person. I believe mines around ambers with 2 hrs but I get different readings occasionally. Consistency in our eating times and similar proportions are probably the most important things we should stick with in order to figure it out. Thanks for the input!0

It depends on both the person and the type of insulin. I use humalog and it's about 2 hours.0

I use Novolog and it works immediately and within sixty minutes. I take my long acting as Lantus. I have decreased my long acting by 5 units in one month. My doc said if I experience lows again, to decrease my Lantus by 2 units every night until I see a normal am reading......0
