Smiths Machine

Does anyone do this plan on a smiths machine and dumbbells?
My gym don't have free weights (booo) but am working a 5x4 on machines. However the squat machine is a Smiths machine and I found a trainer / gym staff member who was happy to show me it tomorrow and work out a plan for me around bodybuilding / weight lifting so I'd like to keep the 5x5 in mind.
Seems really mixed reviews on smiths machines though.

This sums it up better than I can say it. I would not use a smith machine for.. well anything but if you currently don't have another option. :ohwell:0 -

^^This. I used one when I first started out because that's all that my gym had. It did a number on my back and knees. The movement is really awkward.0 -
Thanks for the advice, I did get shown it today and worked on getting my position right compared to normal, I did have to push back a little on the bar though to get it accurate so can understand that's not ideal.
Strange that they are loved by gyms but not by users.
I am going to have to rethink the 5x5 other than doing it on machines at the moment though, I just don't have access to the equipment. Maybe I could change gyms after my degree but I have 2 years left of that yet.
Thanks so much though for the advice on here and my other thread. Sorry to be a 'wannabe'. lol0
