Help my ignorance... does nutritional yeast contain gluten?

I am finding recipes that call for "nutritional yeast". I don't even know what that is. But, I wonder, does it contain gluten? If it does, is their a good gluten free alternative? I am in love with a certain food and every recipe I find for it says to use that to make it. Help. Do any of you know?

    p.s. according to wikipedia, it does not contain gluten. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nutritional_yeast But, I don't always trust that site as a resource. <g> None of the links it cited to that I clicked on were valid. All came back as 404 errors. Not too reassuring.

    I've wondered about that one myself. Are there any Celiac long term diet specialists who could give us a thumb up or thumb down on whether yeast is considered safe?

    Yes, nutritional yeast should be gluten free.

    Read the label, I saw a bottle of the nutritional yeast at the store and it said on the bottle that it could be used in place of wheat, but when I read the label, it had modified food starch (wheat) on it

    If it says it can be used instead of wheat, then it is obviously not just nutritional yeast. 'cause you can't sub one for the other. Odd that it would be labelled that way. Modified food starch may contain wheat, but in North America is more likely to be corn. Did it say it was wheat derived, or was that your assumption?
