Buying a Crib

For reference, this is the crib set I'm looking at:
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Baby-Mod-Ava-Fixed-Side-Crib-with-adjustable-Mattress-Height-Changing-Table-and-3-Drawer-Dresser-Bundle-Espresso/16784335

I am having a terrible time pulling the trigger to buy a crib! I think that the price is really cheap for all 3 pieces, but I'm worried that the actual furniture might be "cheap".

Anyone have any experience with Baby Mod from Walmart? They seem to get good reviews, but it's hard to buy something without actually seeing it.

Thanks for any suggestions!

I was looking at that set for a bit and saw it got really good reviews on overstock.com. But I think I decided I would not have room for the three separate pieces and the dresser was a bit small I think. So I decided on a crib and a shorter, longer dresser where I can change him on top of it. but I still can't decide, so my mom and I are going to ikea next weekend, and hopefully we decide...they also have a lot of good affordable options.

I wasn't impressed with the quality of the cribs at IKEA. I gave them a good wiggle while I was there the other day and they seemed a little rickety. We will get the dresser from IKEA and use the top for a changing table. The crib I am getting at Target. You could get the Walmart crib and then return it if you need to.

I thought the dresser looked a little small too, but I could live with that. I didn't think about looking at the reviews on overstock, thanks! I am a review junkie!

Very true - walmart is pretty good about returns! That does make me feel better. I love some of the dressers at IKEA, but our closest store is 3 hours away. I don't really want the changing table with that walmart set, but it's such a cheap price.

Fyi- you don't have to buy something labeled as a changing table. We just used my old dresser that we still had from before we were married and it has worked out great. He will even get to use it for a long time!

As far as the bed goes... We spent a little more to get something he wouldn't out grow in 2-3 years (one of the convertible cribs). Try and think if it would save you money in the long run to buy something that will grow with the little one. Hope that helps!

Totally agree about the IKEA cribs, and will also be getting a dresser from IKEA with plans to use as it a change table. We ordered our crib through a local boutique, but it was a gift from the in-laws, and did not cost much more than we would have spent at some of the big box stores.

Thanks for the advice on IKEA, our closest store is about 2 hours away. So hopefully we can find a good dresser. Even though my parents are purchasing the furniture, I can't justify them spending the ridiculous amount of money furniture is at baby stores, and honestly those dressers weren't that nice for 500 or more dollars!! I have also considered cribs from target or meijer...I'm just weird and want the finishes to match, and am glad I decided on the dresser for a changing table, I don't have room for more pieces, plus I want a rocking chair in there too. I am for sure getting a convertible crib too, at least to a toddler bed.

We ended up with the Delta brand from Target (I think it's on Amazon too) - a crib and changing table in the winter park series, and dresser in the bentley series. All white, and we paid about $500 for all of it including tax and shipping. They're all really sturdy and the whites match perfectly!

Have you considered getting a sturdier used crib via consignment instead? A lot of the Walmart and Ikea products don't last that long, and with baby safety, it might be better to find a solid wood crib used (not the mattress of course). Just a thought.

We've had Ikea products in the past, and they've never really held up well especially if you end up moving them once they are assembled. I also bought several furniture items via Walmart in the past that I wasn't terribly happy with either.

If you haven't already bought a crib, check out Craig's List for your area. We did and we've found the following set below for half the cost of buying it brand new! Just looked at it tonight and it's in great shape and really sturdy; plan to pick it up this weekend! Definitely something to consider anyway :flowerforyou:

Since the crib I wanted at Ikea was damaged, we bought a graco at Target. Hopefully it holds up, it does have a warranty at least.

We did end up buying a crib last weekend at a specialty store nearby. They use all real wood, and I was able to actually see the crib before we bought it. It wasn't even that expensive - about $450, and it does all of the nifty conversions. My husband is going to pick it up today because we didn't have enough room to bring it home with us last weekend.

And, I found my crib bedding that I HAD to have....it was on Toys R Us for $189 (NoJo Beautiful Butterfly). Yikes!! So, on a whim, I checked out ebay and found it on there for a lot cheaper!! New in box. I should have it next week sometime. Can't wait to have her room put together so I can just sit in there. haha
