When You're Joking, but They Think It's Serious

A friend joked around with me the other day about how if we’re both still single in 5 years we oughta get married. I didn’t think much about it since the girl he really likes (a mutual friend he's asked me for advice about) was sitting right there. So when I was relaying this convo to a male friend, I was surprised when he said guys don’t joke about that kind of stuff and it’s his roundabout way of telling me he likes me.

He doesn't like me (he’s really into our mutual friend, talks about her constantly) but it got me thinking…. What kind of joking have you (or someone you know) done with a member of the opposite sex that you thought was real. Or what happened when you thought something was a joke but THEY thought it was for real? How did it play out?

I am not sure I ever had this happen but a couple of times completely innocent conversation (no double entendres or hidden meaning at all) was taken to be a come on.
When politely but pointedly refused it created first an awkward situation and later kind of a miffed at fate feeling.
One thing to be shot down when you are putting your neck on the chopping block but kind of annoying when not.

I was joking with this one guy about not knowing how he functioned without a woman taking care of him. He said that he never wants to live with anyone and I said "Sure, I bet that'll change" and he responded with "I'll just put it out there... you can't move in with me"

    I was SO confused.

Wait. Didn't I see that movie? I'm sure you've just described a chick flick movie I was forced to watch some years back... I think this all resolves itself at your friends' wedding.
